Established in 1889 by the Council of Agricultural Education, we opened our doors with an enrolment of just 20 students. Original courses were aimed at the sons of farmers who required the equivalent of second year of high school to enrol. Exams were held on Saturday mornings and farm work and classes were often held at night and on weekends. With a strict “lights out” at 10pm rule, no alcohol allowed on the premises and mandatory attendance at church, students would eagerly await the monthly dances, when a busload of girls would arrive from Horsham.

At Longy, we’re genuinely committed to delivering quality education, training and support to students along their entire academic journey. Our student support services cover four main areas. We have a FREE, STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL counselling service for students. If you’re feeling confused, stuck, overwhelmed or just need someone to talk to about personal, academic, and financial issues, please speak to our Student Counsellor.

The Longerenong College Resource Centre is a convenient and relaxed place to study. Large table settings create an ideal environment to assess and identify insects and plants, work on whole farm plans, as well as have constructive group discussions. The Resource Centre holds around 10,000 books and multimedia materials, with relevant journals and newspapers to support the research and information needs of students and staff. The automated catalogue can be accessed from any computer on the campus network.

Longy is much more than an agricultural college - it’s the backbone of a rewarding and fulfilling career. The skills and hands-on experience that our students learn provide life-long understanding of their chosen field, opening employment and career opportunities in one of the most rapidly changing industries in our nation. Students who have graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Agriculture or a Certificate IV in Agriculture, for example, can pursue careers in agronomy, merchandising, consulting in water services to operating farm enterprises, agricultural contracting businesses and overseeing or working in farm-service industries.
