UNSW, which was once regarded in Sydney as “not the University”, is now a member of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8). Universities have become places of calm and diligent work and Warrane has benefitted from this. Challenges and opportunities have come thick and fast during the first 40 years of Warrane’s existence. These have included changes in funding for Universities and Colleges, globalisation, the internet, and now Australia’s Asian Century. Warrane has not only survived but thrived in this changing landscape. The percentage of residents who achieve a distinction or a credit average increases every year. Our former residents are having an impact in different environments of Australian and international public and family life.

Warrane College UNSW is an independent residential college for men affiliated with the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The name “Warrane” is derived from the name given to Sydney Cove by the original inhabitants. It is sometimes spelled as “Warrang” on early European maps. Since 1970, Warrane has been a home away from home for thousands of young men studying at university. In the tradition of Oxbridge colleges, Warrane supports the pursuit of academic excellence and all-round development within a community of university students, teachers and researchers.

Twenty-five residents, including two residential tutors, make up each residential unit of the College. Each student belongs to a community which is small enough to be personal yet large enough to offer cultural diversity and an extensive network of friendship and academic support.

Each year more than forty guests from academia, politics, the professions, business and sport address the residents. This fosters the professional and personal aspirations of the residents through contact with people of high professional standing.

The College promotes a large range of academic, cultural, social, spiritual and sporting activities as well as community projects to give each resident an opportunity for personal growth. Warrane College is a project of Education Development Association, a not-for-profit company and a registered charity. The pastoral care of the College has been entrusted to Opus Dei, an institution of the Catholic Church.

Warrane strives to help residents build a strong character. From promoting an atmosphere of mutual help and support among residents to providing opportunities to mix with top UNSW staff members and leaders from the wider community, Warrane is there to help residents excel at uni and in life. We believe solid values and professional attitudes promote strong families and a strong society.

Warrane is about helping students become well-rounded individuals and men of character who make wise career decisions and have a strong awareness of the bigger picture, taking in the needs of family, friends and society. In essence, Warrane seeks to equip students to live full and fulfilling lives. Warrane seeks to provide a stimulating environment in which the intellectual, moral and overall human development of the men who live there can flourish. Essentially, the college tries to provide a framework within which these ideals can be realised, and it utilises the resources and services of men who share these aims.

For an international student like me, Warrane could be the best place to stay. The college is fully catered and literally situated on campus. More importantly, at Warrane, you could make great friends from every part of the world and listen to their interesting stories and always learn from them. Also, it is NEVER boring to stay at Warrane because of all college activities throughout the whole semester. Warrane is definitely the place to be.

Whilst the College provides a fantastic study environment with a strong focus on academic achievement, the real value of Warrane is in its dedication to helping residents grow in character. With weekly guest speakers, extra-curricular activities such as the Big Picture Program, annual workcamps, social events, inter-college sport and more, Warrane encourages all residents to pursue and develop new interests during their time at university. Through these activities you get to meet those residents outside of your circle of friends whom you may not otherwise have met, which creates a real sense of comradery that is unique to Warrane. Coming from country NSW, Warrane offerred me a true home away from home and not just a place to sleep and study.

The college strives to look after their students to the utmost of their ability no matter of cultural & social background. Warrane does this through placing a huge emphasis on academics as well as sporting, cultural & involvement in community service by offering guidance & encouragement wherever necessary.

As an interstate student, Warrane College offers an experience best described as a second home. The residents treat each other like one big family, and most importantly, you're motivated to excel in university study. Definitely recommend it to any new students at UNSW..

My three years at Warrane provided me with a fantastic on campus lifestyle that supplemented my university studies. Academic and personal support was readily available. The college provided a great social and sporting calendar which involved the entire college. I would highly recommend Warrane for people seeking on campus accommodation at UNSW.

This college offers an excellent balance between university studies, community service, sport and social activities. In addition to the terrific facilities and excellent staff, Warrane offers an opportunity to develop and enrich your character, and helps foster a strong community spirit. The camaraderie amongst the boys is something special and helps create lasting relationships for the work force.
