Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia means ‘National’. The story of its growth from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi—offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialized areas—is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,”

Jamia Millia Islamia came into existence in1920 through the tireless efforts of its founders “the movement of Jamia Millia Islamia is a struggle for education and cultural renaissance. It will prepare a blueprint for Indian Muslims which may focus on Islam but simultaneously evolve a national culture for common Indian. It will lay the foundation of the thinking that true religious education will promote patriotism and national integration among Indian Muslims, who will be proud to take part in the future progress of India, which will play its part in the comity of nations for peace and development. The objective of establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia will be to lay down the common curriculum for Indian Muslims taking into account the future challenges and will prepare the children to be masters of future”.

The mission of the founding fathers of this great institution should not only serve as a beacon light for all the stakeholders, but should also inspire us in making this university as one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the world. It should attain distinction in providing cutting edge learning experience, internationally benchmarked education, intellectual freedom and critical research opportunities in frontier areas of contemporary concern.

While the University has come a long way since its inception, it has to keep pace with the changing needs and expectations of the society. It has to successfully perform the multiple roles of creating new knowledge, acquiring new capabilities and producing an intelligent human resource pool for the promotion of economic growth, cultural development, social cohesion, equity and justice.

In view of special status of Jamia Millia Islamia in our country, we need to deliberate upon reconstituting the academic programmes through introduction of Choice-based Credit System, discuss suitable examination and administrative reforms and consider use of international benchmarks, such as Citation index, Journal Impact factor etc. for evaluating the quality of our research. Apart from strengthening the teaching-learning process, research and extension programmes, special focus on extracurricular, sports and other similar activities to foster global competencies among the students is our priority.

Great University. The teaching staff are extremely helpful and guide the students appropriately. The administration of the University is also great. I have lots of fond memories of Jamia Millia having pursued my Bachelors and Master's studies here.

In terms of standard of education, it does live up to its name of being a central university .The university brings out the best from students. And most importantly its not only an educational institution, but a home . A home that will remain in your heart forever. Will never forget you ‘Jamia’ ❤️

Great atmosphere for study for everyone not only because the education here is good but the thing I loved is the loyalty of people there that is you can leave your phone, laptop and other things in the library and can go for namaj, washroom etc. and nobody gonna touch your accessories.... Such type of loyalty is hardly found in people now a days and that too in such a crowdy place like library or class..
