Our early history can be traced back to the five individual colleges which would be brought together as The City of Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971. Birmingham College of Art has its roots back in October 1843, when the Birmingham Society of Artists opened the Birmingham Government School of Design. In 1884 the School evolved into Birmingham College of Art, moving to a beautiful purpose-built Venetian Gothic building on Margaret Street designed by John Chamberlain. Today Margaret Street, which still houses our Department of Art, is a Grade I Listed Building.

Research is a core component of what we do at Birmingham City University. Our researchers are committed to discovering new knowledge and delivering real benefit to culture, industry, society and the environment. Our dynamic research community works across disciplines and with external companies to address local, national and global challenges. Find out more below. You’ll find a diverse and welcoming environment at Birmingham City University. Our courses are highly practical and career focused, and many are accredited by professional bodies. This means that you'll gain qualifications with us that are prized by employers, giving you an important advantage in the job market. With around 24,000 students, Birmingham City University is one of the UK's major universities. Situated in Birmingham, the UK’s second city and informal capital of the West Midlands, we have a long history of close interaction with this vibrant region. Our dedicated pages allow you to search our current job vacancies or see a full list of our jobs.

We have a distinctive focus on education and research for professional and creative practice. We have a wide collaboration with business, industry and the public services. We're one of the three long-standing universities in the city of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The University is in an exciting phase of its development. Our mission is to establish a strong position as an exemplar for engagement with employers and the community and become a university of choice for its many client groups – at a time when the market is expected to become increasingly competitive. We have re-launched (from our former title of UCE Birmingham) with a new corporate identity and are now developing and implementing a longer term brand strategy.

The University is a highly active institution with ambitions to be fully recognised for its activities and achievements, both now and in the future. We are ultimately seeking to change both our position and reputation, underpinned by transformation of our core business. Engaging more effectively with key stakeholders, partners and people of influence will be essential in building up reputation and increasing word-of-mouth referral.

The quality of education here is remarkable; my son has blossomed in his studies, and the incredibly supportive staff in Birmingham have made every step of his journey a delight.

I love love love studying at BCU. The staff are so helpful and friendly - they really go out of their way to support and help you! The campus is lovely too and brand new! I love sitting on the campus and working during the summer. You will learn more than a degree here and make friends for life :) Birmingham has a great nightlife, shops, and places to eat too! I'm going to miss it :(

I really enjoyed the course, but their postgraduate services leave much to be desired. I have requested a copy of a transcript three times via email and their online web form, to no avail. I need this for a higher degree. Indirectly, BCU are affecting my progress, which is ironic for a university. I shall remove this post if I receive my transcript, otherwise, I advise BCU that their alum' start to matter to them. I

Excellent teaching facility that provides an abundance of knowledge. The students all have the same situation if you are studying there. The staff are very supportive and the success rate in graduation and securing work is 90% in reference to 19 yr old studying there.

I graduated in 2012 with a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree. I had a great experience, the tutors were excellent and supportive. Good luck to the new students starting in September! 3 years fly by so quickly!

This is the University I attended for three years and this place will always be a place that remains in my heart for many years to come. I had three fantastic years here and made so many friends. The nightlife is terrific in Birmingham and the City North Campus is only three miles away from the City Centre. With state of the art facilities, Birmingham City University is continuing to improve year in year out. Because I was studying Journalism, the City North Campus is where I spent the majority of time. This University gave me so many opportunities I never dreamt of at the beginning of my course and I have gone on to work for companies such as the BBC and Sky. This would not have been possible had it not been for the University. I have many fond memories of Birmingham City University and attending this University gave me a real insight into the field I was studying. But it also gave me the chance to let my hair down on a regular basis and meet new people along the way. A University that is on the up for sure.
