We're a leading research institution and feature highly in university league tables. Many of our graduates go on to a promising career soon after leaving Sussex. The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution near Brighton, in the south of England. Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961.
The University of Sussex has more than 15,000 students, of which over a third are postgraduates.
Creative thinking, diversity in our teaching, intellectual challenge and interdisciplinarity have always been fundamental to a Sussex education.
Our goal is to deliver teaching and learning programmes informed by current research, attractive to students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and which deliver skills for life.
Sussex has developed a reputation for innovation and inspiration, and attracts leading thinkers and researchers. We have more than 2,100 staff, including around 1,000 teaching and research staff, of which over 300 are research-only. We have had three Nobel Prize winners, 12 Fellows of the British Academy and a winner of the prestigious Crafoord Prize on our staff.
Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in the UK. Situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces. The campus is surrounded by the South Downs National Park but just a few minutes away from the lively city of Brighton & Hove.
Designed by Sir Basil Spence, the buildings that make up the heart of the campus were given listed building status in 1993. Falmer House is one of only two educational buildings in the UK to be Grade I-listed in recognition of its exceptional interest.
Sussex has a long tradition of engaging with business and the community, which continues today through activities such as the Sussex Innovation Centre, public lectures and services to the community.
Our goal is to help businesses and organisations in the region develop higher staff skill levels through training, and to stimulate innovation through partnership with other institutions outside Sussex to benefit the wider society.
The Sussex Innovation Centre provides support for the creation and growth of technology- and knowledge-based companies in Sussex.
The Centre is now a thriving business environment for nearly 80 high-growth companies.
Since its creation more than 160 companies have been based at the Centre; their cumulative revenue exceeds £250 million and they employ hundreds of people locally.

Thank you once again for doing your part to keep Edarabia the most trusted education source.
The teaching staff are great. The admin staff are terrible and do not care about the students at all!

Started Medical Neuroscience in 2006, this is truly an amazing university with a friendly campus and great accommodation. Great facilities and library, a place I miss. Buses are frequent 24/7 into Brighton and around Falmer, the train station in just over the road by Stanmer Court. All my tutors were incredible, nothing was too much. Professor Tim Roper (the badger man) was my favourite.

An excellent university for creative people looking to express their talents and new-found knowledge and skills theoretically as well as practically. The university supports the students also after graduating.

The English department at this university takes in MA applicants with zero background in cultural theory, philosophy, politics. I had no idea what the material we were assigned to read meant as it was all gibberish to me having never studied theory, postmodernism and such. In the application form for the MA course I was not asked to send in any papers unlike King's college where for the same course you have to submit a written paper to illustrate your knowledge; I was just accepted for the Sussex course the next day without them requiring any information of my previous knowledge in the area of cultural theory or philosophy. During the course the books and essays we were given to read and discuss in the class were obscure and unfathomable to me as they were to others who had not studied this before. Heavy on pure theory and no breaking it down or explaining it in a clear way. It is like admitting someone to medical school when they don't know the first thing about medicine. Nothing was broken down and explained as the tutor just quoted bits from the text and expected everyone to have that level of knowledge already and when some of us asked basic questions his answers were quotes from the text as if we were all PhD students. Clearly this is a waste of time to admit those without previous education and knowledge of this subject matter but it seems Sussex University is only operating like a money making company and doesn't care about educating people.

After spending 3 years looking at several different universities, Sussex tied the knot for me. The staff are friendly and supportive, the departments are well facilitated, the teaching standard (from what I've experienced so far on my visits) seems top quality, they're very easy to get in contact with and their response rates are relatively speedy. They also have a lot to offer in terms of different scholarships and bursary schemes.

Course and department (physics) top marks, Uni facilities top marks, sports included in that, accommodation and family feel top marks, teaching quality top marks, ease for cyclists brilliant, town fantastic for nightlife day life culture variety etc. Very glad to have spent my time here. It's a beautiful and friendly place. Shame everything ain't that cheap, but it ain't London at least!! 5* uni

I've finished my first year here and I love it, a friendly and beautiful campus, a great night life close to campus.Staff is amazing and very helping... The campus has a great gym at the top of a woody hill. Of course there's also the fact that it pretty much borders the South Downs National Park. I can't speak for all departments, but I've found the physics department to be excellent, and to have a positive and relaxed atmosphere.

I loved studying at Sussex and am always filled with nostalgia thinking of the rolling hills, the Brighton seafront, the amazing restaurants and fabulous nightlife. It became a real home away from home and as an international student I found the Faculty staff at the School of Media, Film and Music extremely supportive. I highly recommend it and wish I could go back for my PhD but those British winters are quite formidable . With so many activities, clubs and events going on, there was never a dull moment.
