Councill who, in 1869 founded its predecessor, The Lincoln Normal School. The doors were opened as The Huntsville Normal School and, after undergoing many changes in curriculum due to the vision of Councill, rose in ranks from a junior college to a fully accredited university in 1963. Then, in 1969, our school became known as Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) University.
The original mission of a land-grant university such as AAMU was to focus on teaching agricultural sciences and engineering in response to the Industrial Revolution. AAMU has expanded its curriculum to other areas such as the liberal arts to stay current with the times.
Alabama A&M University was founded in the waning years of the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War. The nation was dealing with rebuilding the South, as well as reconstructing the lives of people who had long been enslaved.AAMU's motto, "Service Is Sovereignty" returns power and nobility to those who devote their lives freely to the service of others.AAMU’s motto is the perfect complement to the University's land-grant mission of teaching, research, and outreach.
AAMU is distinguished by its small size complemented by the large number educational resources and undergraduate majors offered. Undergrads can choose from 51 different majors. AAMU’s hometown, Huntsville, Alabama, known as the “Rocket City” from its early history in the development of the defense and space industries, is a dynamic, culturally rich, and growing city of about 370,000 in the metro area. Huntsville is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal.
A unique addition to the University’s diverse culture if learning, the State Black Archives opened in 1990 to encourage greater awareness of the achievements and contributions of African Americans and the role they played in American society and the world”. The center is housed in the historic James H. Wilson building and contains several impressive permanent exhibits as well as traveling exhibits.
The mission of the Office of Admissions is to recruit, admit, and serve an eligible, diverse student population regionally, nationally, and internationally. The office of admissions also maintains the integrity of the admissions process: thus ensuring an efficient and systematic evaluation of credentials. Through multiple recruitment strategies, the office of admissions works to ensure that eligible students have access to higher education. Accordingly, the vision of the Office of Admissions is to be a leader among peer institutions in optimizing processes and programs in order to achieve university enrollment goals, true to the land grant-tradition. The staff works collaboratively with all departments on campus to ensure enrollment success in accordance with the university’s goals of high academics and student-centered standards and achievements.

AAMU’s serene, intimate campus is situated on “The Hill,” only a short distance from downtown Huntsville and in the midst of the Mountain Lakes region of North Alabama. The beauty of the area, the quality of entertainment and the variety of recreational activities are all part of the AAMU experience.
The Testing Services Center coordinates all University testing activities. Assists academic departments in program evaluation and curriculum assessment activities. Serves as a campus repository for candidate scores for GED campus and PRAXIS assessments. Disseminate score data to appropriate professional personnel to assist in academic advising, curriculum development, career education, and job placement.

My daughter graduated from this institution and our experience has been great! She did not just graduate with a degree, to put in the drawer and return home, but her experience included two internships, paid with housing and stable employment after graduation. Oh yes, her fiancee gained the same experience, internships and employment after graduation.

I have a child that is up at this school she has been without heat for two days and nothing has been done while the staff and Ra are lying but yet have a warm place to be safe and comfortable I pay to much money for her schooling for her to not have heat and hot water I will be there first thing in the morning to withdraw her from this school I wonder what the Alumni association think of this and the board of trustees whom I will be contating them about these issues.

I learned many life lessons from my years at AAMU. This school is far from perfect but due to the strength of the team and coaching staff while at AAMU I was able to become very successful. My collegiate career winning the SWAC Football championship in 2006 and losing in 2010. Many of my teammates are also very successful with their careers and it is partially due to the education and coaching we received while at AAMU.

My son attended Senior Day at the hill this past weekend and it was very nice. The entire day was very well organized. The staff and students were very welcoming. The students who supported the event did an amazing job being and extension of the school and staff. Great job overall.

The worst and most unprofessional school and not convenient for Grad school. Do not go here I warn you!!! Do not waste your time!!!!! First time dealing with this school and I will never try to do this again. Please please please do not waste your time. I'm telling you. People told me not to go here but I didn't listen. They are last minute and very unprofessional. Please don't waste your time.

My daughter and I are both Alabama A&M graduates (1985/2016); we both became Engineers after majoring in Computer Science at A&M (1985/2016); and, we both pledged Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. while at A&M (1984/2014). My nephew just started at A&M this semester, Fall 2017. He will be the third generation of our family to attend and graduate from A&M, and the third generation of our family to become an Engineer. Go Bulldogs!
