Albertus Magnus College

The mission of Albertus Magnus College is to provide men and women with an education that promotes the search for truth in all its dimensions and is practical in its application. Founded by the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Albertus Magnus College, faithful to its Catholic heritage and the Judeo-Christian tradition, remains dedicated to providing an opportunity for learning which responds to the academic needs and ethical challenges of its students and society.

You’ll find the garden-like campus of Albertus Magnus College nestled on 50 acres of rolling land in the beautiful and elegant suburban Prospect Hill neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut. Many of this area’s historic 19th century mansions are now owned by the College and used for residence halls and administrative offices.

While our close-knit campus community provides you all the support, safety and security you might want, you’re also in one of the educational and cultural centers of the northeastern United States. New Haven is home to nearly 16,000 students at seven colleges and universities. Just a short distance from the Albertus Magnus campus, you can explore the waterfront, music, theatre, arts, shopping and many local and state parks. Connected to New York City, Boston and Providence by rail, bus and air, you’ll always find something to do in the New Haven area.

Campus facilities at Albertus Magnus College include the Tagliatela Academic Center with state-of-the-art science labs, an MIS suite and a communications studio; Aquinas Hall academic building with Bree Common; Walsh Hall, home of our College Chapel; Weldon Hall, one of the original campus buildings now renovated for programs in the Education Department; the Rosary Hall library; Cosgrove, Marcus, Messer Athletic Center with swimming pool, double gymnasium, racquetball courts, weight/cardio and dance rooms; Hubert Campus Center with the Behan Community Room and DeDominicis Dining Hall, bookstore, mailroom, House of Bollstadt student pub, Common Ground CyberLounge, offices for Student Services and Career Services; ACT 2 Theatre and outdoor recreational facilities for tennis and soccer, as well as a running track and open spaces for informal activities.

Choose from traditional undergraduate, accelerated undergraduate and traditional graduate degrees at Albertus Magnus College.A variety of traditional liberal arts programs lead to bachelor’s degrees. Typical full-time undergraduate day students average 30 credits in two semesters per year and graduate after four years.Programs to prepare you for master’s degrees range from art therapy and liberal studies to education, leadership and business administration.Full-time, part-time and accelerated options are available.

If you are a busy adult who needs to keep working while you pursue your education, Albertus offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to fit your life.With at least three years of relevant business experience, you can work toward associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees in the business-focused New Dimensions format.

In 1924, the Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of the Springs, who are now known as the Dominican Sisters of Peace, purchased an estate in New Haven, Connecticut, in an effort to found a women’s college. A charter was signed on July 13, 1925, and the first classes at Albertus Magnus College were held on September 24, 1925 in Rosary Hall, the mansion on the property.

Since 1926, the College has acquired several mansions, which are used for student residences and administration. Rosary Hall now houses the College library. The latest constructions on campus include the Tagliatela Academic Center, Bree Common and the renovated Walsh Hall, which includes the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel. The Cosgrove, Marcus, Messer Athletic Center opened in 1989. This indoor sports and recreation center houses a pool, a gymnasium and indoor track, racquetball and volleyball courts, weight and dance rooms, and a new fitness center. The Center is part of the athletic complex featuring a soccer field, an outdoor track and tennis courts.

Albertus Magnus College became co-educational in all its programs in 1985. In the same year, the Continuing Education Division expanded its offerings for adult learners to include a pioneering Accelerated Degree Program (ADP). In 1994, the College introduced New Dimensions, an alternative educational delivery system focused on business, also for adult learners and including undergraduate and graduate courses.

In 1992, Albertus Magnus offered its first graduate program, the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. Since then, the College has added seven graduate programs: Master of Arts in Art Therapy, the only degree of its kind in Connecticut; Master of Arts in Leadership; Master of Fine Arts in Writing; Master of Science in Human Services; Master of Business Administration; Master of Science in Education; and Master of Science in Management and Organizational Leadership.Today, Albertus has approximately 500 full-time traditional (day) undergraduates and 1,000 adult undergraduate and graduate students from eight U.S. states and two international countries.

The College's Board of Trustees was reorganized in 1969 so that 80 percent of its members are lay people; the others are members of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. The College remains true to its Dominican heritage and continues to be dedicated to the search for truth in all its dimensions.
