Georgetown University is one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions, offering a unique educational experience that prepares the next generation of global citizens to lead and make a difference in the world. We are a vibrant community of exceptional students, faculty, alumni and professionals dedicated to real-world applications of our research, scholarship, faith and service.

Established in 1789, Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. Drawing upon the 450-year-old legacy of Jesuit education, we provide students with a world-class learning experience focused on educating the whole person through exposure to different faiths, cultures and beliefs.

Students are challenged to engage in the world and become men and women in the service of others, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community. These values are at the core of Georgetown’s identity, binding members of the community across diverse backgrounds.

Georgetown has grown to be a major international research university with nine schools, an affiliated hospital and many highly ranked academic programs. Today the university has more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students who take classes at five locations: Main Campus, Medical Center, Law Center, School of Continuing Studies and the university’s School of Foreign Service-Qatar. Georgetown has a large and diverse workforce that employs more than 5,000 faculty and staff members. Under the leadership of President John J. DeGioia, Georgetown has seen rapid growth and expansion, including the addition of several residence halls and the new, state-of-the-art Rafik B. Hariri Building for the business school. Georgetown continues to move forward as one of the world’s leading universities, building upon its distinctive history, unique values and commitment to justice and the common good.

Few universities in the world offer the extraordinary range and diversity of research opportunities that Georgetown students and faculty enjoy. The university’s location in the nation’s capital provides unparalleled opportunities for learning at leading scientific centers and institutes as well as top policy think tanks.

We look for ways to apply our research and scholarship to help meet the challenges of our age, whether this means working for social justice or fostering greater cross-cultural understandingThe Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies Georgetown as a Very High Research Activity (RU/VH) University. This classification reflects our commitment to an intellectual environment that is conducive to the discovery and communication of new knowledge.

Our largest research center – Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC)– is home to more than 400 scientists working on basic and clinical research projects and 300 active clinical trials. These researchers focus on cancer, neuroscience, child health and development and global health. Across the university we are researching issues in international development, public policy, chemistry, biology, psychology and physics.

An undergraduate applicant's ability to pay tuition is not a criterion for admission. In 1978, Georgetown began its historic commitment to meet the financial need of every undergraduate who merits admission. The University works to provide eligible students 100 percent of their demonstrated financial need through scholarships, loans and other forms of assistance. Our practices mean that every eligible undergraduate student, once accepted, can afford to enroll. Each year over half of Georgetown undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance.

Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher learning in the United States. John Carroll’s founding of Georgetown College coincides with the birth of our nation. In 1789, Carroll secured the deed to 60 acres of land on a hilltop overlooking the village of Georgetown. He was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore in 1808.Classes began in 1792. Within the first year, attendance grew to more than 40 students, from as far away as the West Indies. In 1817, the school awarded its first two bachelor’s degrees.

Beautiful campus - I wish I was young again so I could rethink my college selection and go here. Surrounding by a beautiful town - Georgetown - so quaint and historic looking...definitely has the European feel that I love. The kids here are so lucky - beautiful grounds and campus - the main buildings in the entry of the campus are beautiful. The main building looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie - very grand, ornate, and old - very cool indeed.

I loved my experience as a student here! Georgetown encourages students to think beyond themselves and give back to the world. If you can get in - Go to GU!

My wife and I have had up and down experiences with the graduate department here but the bottom line is that Georgetown is amazing. It's a whole different world when you step on a campus

Georgetown is the best university in the world. Very nice people - great professors and caring students that want to help change the world and make it a better place! I learned here more than anywhere else I have been and made friendships that will last a lifetime. Also has an amazingly beautiful campus in DC and awesome history. The oldest Catholic University in America and as far as I have seen the most accommodating college for students of all faiths.
