While our name and curriculum have changed through the years, our primary focus has not: Bemidji State University serves the people of its region and state. From its inception, BSU’s first responsibility has been to provide quality educational opportunities to the citizens of northern Minnesota. Over the decades we have attracted more and more students from around the region, the country and the world. Recognizing the importance of global education, the university encourages international students to study and live at BSU as we increase student opportunities to study and live abroad. And as we expand our online course offerings, we are able to serve more students living and working outside the area as they strive to secure a brighter future for themselves and their families.
In response to a growing need for public school teachers, the school was chartered by the Minnesota State Legislature, and teacher training was its primary curriculum. Bemidji Normal became Bemidji State Teachers College and began offering a four-year degree in 1921.Reflecting ongoing changes in the curriculum, the school was renamed Bemidji State College in 1957. In 1975, in recognition of its growing role as a multi-purpose educational institution, it became Bemidji State University.BSU now hosts more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. We offer baccalaureate degrees in a wide range of fields, master degrees in the arts and sciences and a variety of online learning options. Several of our degree programs and research activities are unique in the state.

Bemidji State University allowed me to connect and be social while attending a school in beautiful northern Minnesota. If you love the outdoors, you'll enjoy this university. The tight-knit campus community, as well as the smaller class sizes helped me develop relationships with professors and my classmates. I recommend that if you're interested in a 4-year university, but don't want the "big city" feel. Bemidji State University is the place for you!

I was accepted to several other MN state colleges and picked Bemidji for the design program. Great program with great professors and career opportunities after graduation.
Bemidji is a small town but surprisingly has a good night life if you're a somewhat social person. Parties are easy to find and police stay out of your hair unless you are uncooperative.

I will be a junior this upcoming school year and absolutely love the school. I love the campus and the professors are really nice. Schoolwork has been really easy for what I thought it should be and there are always fun parties to go to on the weekends and usually the week.

The athletics are good. Hockey is by far the best to watch and play if you are a guy. Girls not so much. the campus is on a lake which is beautiful and you can canoe and kayak on it during the summer and early fall. a lot of clubs and campus activities and opportunities to make new friends and meet new people. SOME of the faculty is hard to get a hold of when needed but usually you can find them. the course work is challenging but with not much procrastination you'll do fine. the housing is great birch hall and linden hall by far the best to live in. oak as a freshman is great. tamarack hall if you like a lot of people constantly around and goofing off lol. the city of bemidji is medium 10k-15k perfect size if you ask me. great school. wish the women's hockey team didnt stink otherwise i wouldnt have transfered to play somewhere else. OH also the food isnt bad...i actually miss it.compared the school im at now. also the campus/student stores are great place to use beaver bucks

BSU has no desire to be in the top 1 or 2 tiers of public Universities. Its greatest strengths are that is very inexpensive, and the wholesome environment created by the setting and the exceptionally friendly students. This school is best suited to develop people personally. The town of Bemidji deserves to be featured in a movie - because of its uniqueness. A surprisingly high number of international students attend the University.
