Elmira College is a private, coeducational, Phi Beta Kappa college located in Elmira, New York.Founded in 1855, Elmira was the first college for women with a course of study equal in rigor to the best men’s colleges. “Female seminaries” as they were called at the time, were essentially glorified high schools. In contrast, from its very inception, Elmira College offered rigorous academic programs.

Becoming coeducational in 1969, today Elmira has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 1,200 full-time, mostly residential students. The College also offers advanced certificates, master degree programs, and non-credit courses for professional development.

As the guardian of Quarry Farm, where Mark Twain summered for decades and wrote many of his most iconic novels, Elmira College is home to the Center for Mark Twain Studies, one of four nationally recognized Twain sites which serves as a research center for visiting Twain scholars.

Grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, Elmira College provides a collaborative and supportive environment that enables students to become active learners, effective leaders, responsible community members, and globally engaged citizens. Proud of its history and tradition, the College is committed to the ideals of community service and intellectual and personal growth.

Professors provide their email addresses to students so that they can be contacted with questions and they expect students to use them. The academic experience at EC leads to a lifetime of rewarding career and personal opportunities.

An Elmira College education based in the leadership core of the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, combines with communication and global citizenship to prepare you for a lifetime of success. Elmira is one of only 268 colleges and universities nationwide found worthy of a prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Charter. In fact, Elmira College's Phi Beta Kappa chapter has been lauded as the best chapter at a liberal arts college in the nation. Our students, empowered by an engaging academic program and real-world experiential learning, become successful contributors to our global society.

An education is not just about acquiring information and preparing to enter the workforce. Leaders in any profession need motivational skills (learned in psychology and the social sciences) and analytical skills (learned in the natural sciences and economics). Leaders need historic perspective. As George Santayana declared, "those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them." Leaders need to be effective communicators, learned in literature, and the fine and performing arts.

Elmira College's academic core features this wide range of critical learning skills, thereby encouraging students to become lifelong learners in a broad base of fields of interest and study. The most successful college alumni invariably refine their career directions throughout college and beyond.Experiential learning, challenging study of substantial breadth, and faculty who invest in their students enable you to take your place as a leader in your future community.

My academic and social experiences at Elmira College were quite positive. Professionally people recognize the college in a positive light, and frankly I have never been ashamed of the quality of my education.

In high school I was quiet reserved person; coming to Elmira College was a great choice for me because I wasn't just a number to my faculty. During my time on campus I have had the opportunity to not only get involved in life on campus, I got the chance to study abroad in Australia!

This follows my earlier posting as a parent of an incoming freshman (I used the scores of other students blended with my son's perception of the school in order to input this post). I simply wanted to update my take on the WiFi situation at Elmira. My understanding is that Elmira College is now fully WiFi everywhere on campus. Yet another positive turn for the better for this school, and that's really what any student or parent wants to see, right? Progress.

I thoroughly enjoyed Elmira College! Attended for 4 years. Made many friends while at Elmira College and still keep in touch to this day! Very good camaraderie! Almost a fraternity type environment in that you get to know everyone. The old saying still goes: "you get out of it what you put into it." The academics at Elmira were challenging and the professors were excellent. I did not take advantage of the semester abroad, but wished I had. The athletics were also great to participate in and be a spectator. Having come from a small high school of 300-400 students, Elmira College was just the right place for me!

My experience at Elmira College has been extremely positive. I have made so many friends and learned a great deal, both in the classroom and out. The faculty here want to see you succeed and are determined to help you. The campus is beautiful and postcard-like. The new dorm is almost finished - I'm living there next year as a senior! I dont want to leave Elmira College, but I know that it has prepared me for life after college.
