One of the first things you’ll notice about Brevard College is the strong sense of community. The entire campus – administration, faculty, and staff – is fully committed to providing Brevard students with a hands-on and engaging environment. Our goal is to put the mission statement to the test on a daily basis, whether it’s in the classroom, on the court or field, or in our community.
Brevard’s experiential academic programs, small class sizes, outstanding faculty, and mountain location combine to create a unique educational atmosphere that will challenge you to meet your potential. Here, you’ll learn to connect knowledge to action. On this campus you’ll actually do your education, not just memorize the answers.Brevard believes service-learning is the best way to reinforce and teach knowledge. It allows you to actively engage with your community and your education. In your time here you will greatly expand your experiences, your resume, and your mind.
Brevard College is committed to an experiential liberal arts education that encourages personal growth and inspires artistic, intellectual, and social action. At Brevard College, education is much more than learning the ‘right answers’ and doing well on a test. Experiential academics develop students’ ability to think, work in a group, and reflect upon and apply their learning to real world problems.
Our classrooms are student centered, not teacher centered. Our classes are problem based; we use content to tackle important issues rather than just deliver information. In addition to learning theory, our students apply theory to real situations. We cultivate skills through individualized learning and performance, but we also develop our students' abilities to work collaboratively in teams—creating the perfect combination of skills needed for real life situations.
Let’s say that a business class is going to study mission statements. One option would be for the professor to assign reading and provide a lecture on mission statements for the students, and then the students would take a test showing that they learned the key content. Another option would be for the professor to set student responsibility for background information and facilitate direct experiences to work with the material. We believe that this second option helps students really understand the material and use the content, which makes for more meaningful, exciting and memorable learning.
We create active learning experiences that make learning interesting and applicable. We develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a subject. We engage in focused reflection on their experience to identify learning they may apply to future endeavors. We don’t teach students what to think, we develop students’ ability to think.
We produce curious, prepared, and highly engaged graduates through hands-on learning experiences. We don’t just want to tell you the right answer - we teach you how to question and discover the answers for yourself. We don’t want to just put a degree in your hands – we develop your ability and passion for making a difference in the world. We believe in experiential education, and this is reflected in the teaching methods we use in our classrooms.
With this philosophy, the possibilities for learning are endless. We learn about a subject in greater depth, with greater understanding, and with better retention. We learn and refine specific skills. We learn more about ourselves, our values, and how we work with others. Ultimately, these rich learning experiences open the doors for us to contribute to our communities, translating knowledge into action.
A Brevard College education extends far beyond the walls of a classroom. Student involvement in community-based service projects, clubs, or intramural sports is an important part of the Brevard College experience.Brevard College welcomes Veterans! If you qualify for VA benefits, your out-of-pocket costs to attend Brevard College may be comparable to that of a public college or university. As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, Brevard College commits up to $5,000 per year in funds to eligible veterans.

Make sure you want to go to a small, liberal arts college in the mountains. This school is not for everyone. In fact, it's not for most people looking for the standard college experience. If you want to party go elsewhere. If you want a school with plentiful funding and great facilities go elsewhere. If you want to be in a small classroom and develop meaningful and lasting relationships with your peers and professors then BC is a good place to do it. Professors here truly care about the success of their students.

I love Brevard so much, but other than the WLEE major the other classes are waayyy easier than my high school. In talking to other students they seem to have the same thoughts. This school centers a lot around athletics despite the fact that none of our sports teams are good. That being said I wouldn't recommend Brevard if you are an athlete who wants to go to a big party school. There is definitely drinking here and some good parties but there aren't crazy parties every weekend. All this being said the people here are some of the best and friendliest I have ever met. I know that I have made friends at Brevard that I will keep for a lifetime. I'm transferring after tis year but only because Brevard doesn't have my major.

Brevard is a beautiful place. The mountain air does something to you...in a good way. It is a friendly environment and supportive. Being on a small campus or in a small town may be frustrating for some people. Of course, there is more to college than living the stereotypical college life. Things do get around fast on a small campus so you do have to make your decisions carefully. That should be a given anyway.I think that visiting a campus is important. You get to see what it is like. You'll know if it is the right place for you or not. I do love Brevard. I wish that there was a Master's program there. If there was then I'd be there now.
