The University of North Dakota has always been ahead of its time. Founded in 1883, six years before the state itself was established, UND gave North Dakota its name when the former Dakota territories separated into two distinct states. Today, UND is a busy 521-acre campus, the state’s largest. We've emerged as a leader in engineering, medicine, aviation, and unmanned aircraft systems.

Every accredited college or university offers education, but not every school prepares students to make a real impact the way UND does. UND is increasingly regarded as one of the top academic and research institutions in the nation. In fact, the National Science Foundation ranks UND #151 in the nation.

UND is the only university in North Dakota with law and medical schools. We also have the top graduate school in North Dakota. We continue to lead in educating the region's doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists and business professionals. Our efforts provide $1.7 billion in overall economic impact to the state and region.

Our mission is to provide transformative learning, discovery and community engagement opportunities for developing tomorrow's leaders. Core Values are..

  • Community: A spirit of collaboration and connectedness across the University and beyond
  • Discovery: An enthusiasm for inquiry, creativity, and innovation
  • Diversity: An understanding and appreciation of diverse people, experiences, and ideas
  • Inclusivity: A welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all
  • Liberal Arts: An educational foundation essential for living an intellectually curious, personally fulfilling, and socially responsible life
  • Lifelong Learning: A passion for learning, civic engagement, and community leadership

The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff and visitors are our foremost concern. You have a right to feel safe at the University of North Dakota.

UND is consistently ranked as the safest college in North Dakota. We work diligently to reduce the risk and potential for crime, but recognize we cannot do it alone. Safety and security is a shared responsibility and we need your help. The best protections against campus crime are:

  • A strong law enforcement presence.
  • An aware, informed, alert campus community.
  • A commitment to reporting suspicious activities and using common sense when carrying out daily activities.

Founded in 1883, six years before North Dakota became a state, our founders believed they could make a difference. And they did. Like our founders, we believe no obstacle is too big and no challenge too great. Throughout our long history, we have faced our share of challenges, but each time we've come back stronger. In times of adversity, we come together and keep fighting. For us, persistence pays off.
