Established in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg; renamed Bucknell University in 1886 in honor of William Bucknell, a major benefactor. The University is highly selective, private, nonsectarian, coeducational (since 1883), residential and undergraduate, with a small graduate program.Bucknell's 450-acre campus is occupied year-round. Academic semesters run from September through December and mid-January through mid-May. During the summer, Bucknell hosts business and professional conferences and sports camps.
At Bucknell, you can choose from a much larger selection of majors, minors and courses than other liberal arts colleges and universities.You can major in English and go to medical school, major in Spanish and become a CEO, major in anthropology and become a marketing executive, or major in engineering and become a manager. About 25 percent of our students go one step further and double up on majors. But many more of our students compete in recreational sports through an extensive intramural program. It consists of more than 40 men's, women's and co-recreational teams — from basketball and golf to tennis and volleyball. Many students enjoy the friendly competition provided by the 20 student-initiated and student-run club sports.

Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I sports (football competes in the Division 1 - Football Championship Subdivision). Bucknell has felt like home since the first week I was on campus. I knew I would be coming to a school where most everyone was in the top 10% of there class in hight school and many came from more money than I did. Back ground has never been an issue, I am just with a bunch of intelligent kids that love to learn. The faculty are very easy to talk to and I could not imagine being at a school where your classes were taught by grad students.

I think Bucknell trained me remarkably well for the career I am now pursuing. One of the great things about it is that the professors are always accessible and that every course is taught by a full professor. That is very different from the experiences of many of my co-workers who went to Ivy schools.

I was recruited here for a sport. I couldn't be happier. Faculty is very helpful and easy to talk to. Campus is beautiful. Athletic facilities are as good as any small school in the country.The only thing I'd point out is that Lewisburg is not the big city. If you're looking for downtown NYC then it won't be a good fit.

My experience at Bucknell University was one of the best of my life. I was an International Relations major and had the opportunity to participate in a great junior-year-abroad program in France through Bucknell, and it was life-changing. I would recommend this option to anyone who has an interest in "seeing the world" and experiencing an in-depth immersion in another culture. It ultimately helped me in getting positions that have led me to a very happy life. I would love to be able to send my children to BU someday!

I am an international relations major with a double major in Russian. I am in the Russian club and do some community service on campus. Good things about the school- beautiful campus, nice dorms, lots of student run activities. Bad things- too much Greek life, too much partying and drinking.Overall I would say that this is a great school. I have lots of friends and always find things to do. The school work is really tough but not manageable. The amount of partying, drinking and hooking up that goes on here really surprised me. I knew there would be some but I didn't realize that most people just want to get drunk on the weekends. Once I found people like me who don't like to party and drink I had a great time doing other things like watching movies, hanging out at the cafe and just hanging out in people's rooms. Don't let the party scene scare you away from coming here. There are a lot of cool people who like to do other things.

Bucknell has a quality reputation and that increases the value of my degree. My education there was outstanding, both academically and character-wise. The faculty are very involved with the students and there are tons of activities in which to get involved. My only regret is that I did not participate in a study abroad program. For current high school students, I would highly recommend Bucknell. But for those who are spoiled with constant entertainment, they will likely be unsatisfied with a rural school. Cultural and outdoor activities abound for those who are motivated to participate. Bucknell's strongest asset is it's students, both in terms of character and intellect. Of course, every school has self-serving students who can't seem to spend their time usefully, but on-the-whole, Bucknell students are a great group of people who sincerely want to make life better for others.
