Scranton is a private Catholic and Jesuit institution that delivers a transformative education, grounded in the liberal arts. Every aspect of a Scranton education exists to help our students succeed. Scholars are challenged here, and supported.
Spirituality is at the core of our mission as a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning. The chief characteristics embedded in the Ignatian vision include: the concept of the Magis, or a restless pursuit of excellence grounded in gratitude; Cura Personalis, individual attention to students and respect for the uniqueness of each member of the University community; seeking God in all things; liberal education; service of faith and the promotion of justice; and contemplation in action.
The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus and those who share its way of proceeding. The University is a community dedicated to the freedom of inquiry and personal development fundamental to the growth in wisdom and integrity of all who share its life.
The University of Scranton will be boldly driven by a shared commitment to excellence. We will provide a superior, transformational learning experience, preparing students who, in the words of Jesuit founder St. Ignatius Loyola, will "set the world on fire."
At The University of Scranton, student learning is assessed at a variety of levels - the course level, program level, and institutional level. One of the most common remarks students make upon their return to the University of Scranton after studying abroad is that “it was a life-changing experience.” Studying abroad provides the opportunity for students to develop skills, knowledge and experience that they simply cannot gain while in residence at the University of Scranton.
Not only is the experience abroad “life-changing” from a personal perspective, but it also serves as a way to distinguish oneself amongst peers after graduation from the University. Most American college students do not study abroad and as a result, prospective employers and postgraduate academic programs are generally very interested in a student’s international experience.
Scranton is selective in its admission process, and applications are competitive. Most of our undergraduate students have excelled academically in high school and have distinguished themselves through extracurricular activities, leadership and community service. Graduate students focus on their fields of specialization under the guidance of our top-notch faculty.
Scranton has a rich tradition of fostering an experience in which students, both residential and commuter, get involved. Student Life is vibrant and varied, from ministries-based programs and leadership initiatives to student-run activities, and clubs and organizations.
The Division of Student Life supports the academic mission of the University by providing services and programs that enhance classroom experiences. There are numerous opportunities to learn more about the Catholic/Christian faith, and to pray and share faith with students, faculty and staff.
Professional counselors help students match their unique talents and aspirations to career options. Students gain crucial leadership skills that are necessary for success on campus and beyond. Our Residence Life program is designed to enhance learning and promote responsible living in a supportive community.
