Welcome to Lobo Land! The choice to invest your future at Sul Ross State University will take you places that you never dreamed possible. Sul Ross is an opportunity for you to start a new life and take the next steps to a successful career.
As a “destination university,” Sul Ross makes its home in the rural west Texas region of Alpine, Texas. Our university boasts some of the most beautiful campus grounds in the entire state of Texas! We are a small four-year university that offers personal and individual attention to our students. Our class sizes are small and our faculty have the opportunity to get to know our students. We have students from local areas like Alpine, Marfa, Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, and Pecos. And we have students that come from cities such as San Antonio, El Paso, Austin, and Dallas. But our diversity extends around the globe as we have students from Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, China, England, and Australia.
The Rio Grande College is an upper level and graduate college that is located in four Middle Rio Grande Cities – Castroville, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde. Our professors provide hands on learning in ways that relate to our students and their passion for higher education. Each college course is accessible via interactive television, online learning communities, and face to face classes.
Our mission at Sul Ross State University is to prepare students to be responsible, educated, and valuable leaders in careers spanning the nation and world. We are excited to offer degree programs in: Criminal Justice, Education, Biology, Theater, Animal Science, Natural Resource Management and many others. The opportunities are endless for you when you make the decision to enroll at Sul Ross. But don’t take my word for it: explore our site, schedule a campus visit, and talk with our current and former students.
For more than 80 years the university has been providing excellent undergraduate and master's degree opportunities in West Texas. A full complement of academic programs await students here. At Sul Ross, we prepare you to successfully launch your professional career, confident and well prepared.
Some schools focus their attention on faculty research and on publishing articles in academic journals. We know that a university's true purpose is to provide students with what they need to succeed professionally. That's why we focus on teaching real students real-world skills. Our success is ultimately measured by the success you attain in your career and in your life.
Most freshman classes at the big state schools are from 200-800 students each! And sometimes the professor just lectures over a large-screen TV. Not so at Sul Ross, where the average class size is 20 students. Students are pleasantly surprised by how much attention professors can give them when classes are kept small. You'll quickly see the difference it makes when you have professors who really get to know you and find out what your needs really are.
Sul Ross State University in Far West Texas boasts a combination of small class sizes, an appreciation of both fine arts and the sciences and popular professional programs in a relaxed, friendly environment.
The university, comprising 647 acres in Alpine, Texas, boasts a beautiful 93-acre main campus of exquisitely-detailed buildings and enjoys perhaps the most temperate climate in the state. Its situation in the Davis Mountains overlooks the center of the city below, yet it remains within easy reach of many local stores and restaurants. The university also has a 468-acre working ranch that serves its animal science programs.
The university has three satellite campuses in Del Rio, Uvalde and Eagle Pass, collectively known as Rio Grande College. SRSU and Rio Grande College are part of The Texas State University System, the largest college system in the state after the University of Texas and Texas A&M systems.
With an enrollment of about 2,000 students on the main campus in Alpine, class sizes are small, guaranteeing a much higher level of personal attention from instructors and the university's support staff. But there's plenty for students to do in their free time: lots of student clubs and organizations, a thriving arts community and a strong athletic tradition. Rodeo is significant part of the Sul Ross program, and the university is the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Many team members have gone on to become world champions, and 1951 graduate Harley May is a charter member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame.
The Office of Student Life serves to enhance the student experience at Sul Ross State University and help students develop personal, social and leadership skills that will contribute to their careers and communities. Student Support Services is a program designed to increase the academic performance, retention rates and graduation rates of 160 program participants.
