Mason is a young university that, in just a short time, has made impressive strides in size, stature and influence. Today, as Virginia’s largest public research university, we are setting the benchmark for a bold, progressive education that serves the needs of our students and communities. To that end, we have 10 schools and colleges devoted to a variety of areas of study.

George Mason, for whom our university is named, was one of the greatest of the founding fathers of the United States.Mason drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which became a model for the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights.

Mason is committed to creating a more just, free and prosperous world. Located in one of the most important political, economic and intellectual hubs in the world, we accept our responsibility to serve others: to help our students succeed, enrich the life of our community, and contribute to solving some of the most complex global problems of our time.

We are a progressive, diverse university and our leadership reflects that. We come from many different backgrounds, many different places, and each of us brings something different to the table. It is these very contrasts that allow us to look beyond the expected as we share the responsibility and commitment to ensure the success of our students in their academic goals, personal lives, careers, communities and whatever other endeavors they may choose to pursue. Our graduates go on to become involved, caring and contributing members of society, who seek to make a positive imprint. It’s the best lesson we teach.

Mason has three campuses in Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William Counties in Virginia and an international campus in Songdo, Korea. In addition, Mason operates a site in Loudoun County and has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to offer a global conservation studies program at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.

The Fairfax Campus consists of 677 wooded acres and is the principal center for undergraduate residence and life. The on-campus population is currently more than 6,000 and is expected to grow to 7,000 as new residential units are constructed. Our Fairfax Campus is also home to the Center for the Arts and the EagleBank Arena where numerous sporting and entertainment events take place year round.

Our most urban campus is in Arlington. It consists of three main buildings and is where the Antonin Scalia Law School, the Schar School of Policy and Government, and the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution are located. Most of the programs offered are at the graduate and professional levels.

Serving all of Northern Virginia, the George Mason University Science and Technology Campus in Prince William County primarily focuses on research and academic programs in the life sciences, including bioscience, biotechnology and bioinformatics. The campus features a state-of-the-art Biomedical Research Laboratory and the recently launched Institute for Advanced Biomedical Research, a multidisciplinary facility that will pursue some of the toughest medical questions facing society.

I graduated from Mason several years ago and was extremely happy with my choice when I first made it. I graduated from high school with honors, applied to only GMU, received early exceptance and went full speed ahead without hesitation. I recently re-visited the campus and am still pleased with my choice. Mason is a very diverse community. It's a great indication of what the "real world" is like. You see the value of the tuition you pay entered back into the "Mason Community". There is always something new being developed to help stay current and competitive with schools that are ranked much higher. Yes, every school has it's good and bad. Mason is no exception. Life is what you make it and it's about what you do. You can't blame Mason because you failed to do your part in making your college life something that you did or did not want it to be!

Clean facilities, good teachers in general, very active community and a welcoming reception to incoming Freshman who aren't sure just what to expect from college life. The number of services they provide is wonderful and the free transportation they offer for off-campus students (Shuttles, Gunston Go, CUE bus) make the University welcoming to all types. Great location near the Metro and D.C., as well as plenty of different malls and places to find entertainment for students off-hours.

Graduated with a master's in science (chemistry). Chemistry staff are very helpful, reasonable, and very compatible with those who work full time and go to school. Many services online that make being a student extremely easy and affordable. parking prices are a bit high, but in a nice neighborhood.
