Spokesperson: Daniel Adkins, CEO of Global Institute Middle East, the Academic Partner of Curtin University Dubai.

With Curtin University’s first foray into the Middle East, what made you prefer Dubai?

In the last decade, the UAE has become an important hub for education in the region. Dubai is a unique destination attracting many highly esteemed international universities owing to the exponential growth in the education sector – especially for tertiary education. This attracts students from the region and around the world who are coming to the country to enrol in globally recognised academic programmes offered by these institutes. The growth in the number of expatriates seeking world class education is also encouraging more international universities to have a foot print here.

Curtin University’s newest campus at Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) will be a creative hub, could you elaborate on that?

Curtin University looks forward to bringing its unique brand of learning to the UAE, as well as its focus on research and innovation. Curtin is a leader in collaborative and blended learning and will be bringing this style of learning to Dubai. As a world renowned research university, Curtin will be establishing a research and innovation hub in Dubai to partner with UAE business and government to develop innovative solutions to opportunities in the region.

What are some of the new programs students can expect from Curtin Dubai?

When Curtin University Dubai opens its doors in May 2017, we will be offering Foundation Courses for students coming out of High School and looking to prepare themselves for University.

By 2018, we will be opening up our undergraduate and master’s courses for anybody looking to receive a highly rated degree from a top Australian university. Some of the Bachelor Degrees that we will be offering are in Commerce, Science, Art, and Communications. We will also be offering a Masters in Education, alongside a Masters in the Science of Project Management.

Tell us about the University’s motto #MakeTomorrowBetter?

Education for the sake of having a piece of paper to hang on the wall is not the goal of Curtin Dubai, nor is education just to get a job or promotion. Given that less than 10% of the world’s population have the opportunity to complete a university education, it is incumbent upon those who have this privilege to make the world a better place. Curtin believes strongly that every person and especially those who have had the privilege of a university education should strive throughout their lives to improve the world and to make every tomorrow better.

With a growing focus from Australian universities, what sets Curtin apart from the rest?

Curtin is ranked in the top two per cent of universities worldwide in the highly regarded Academic Ranking of World Universities 2016 (ARWU). In 2016, Curtin was estimated to be positioned 211th in the world and 10th in Australia. Curtin Business School is also AACSB accredited which demonstrates that it is among the top business schools in the world. These rankings are extremely important to prospective students as degrees from highly ranked universities can offer increased opportunities in both further education and in employment. Upon opening its doors in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), Curtin University Dubai will be the highest ranked Australian university in the UAE.

Curtin is renowned for research – would these innovative approaches extend to its campus here in Dubai?

It is important for Curtin University to ensure that each of its campuses upholds the innovative values that are central to Curtin’s vision. Curtin will be establishing a research hub in Dubai and students will have the opportunity to work on projects for local businesses and government. Curtin does not see international campuses as separate or different. The same teaching methods and the same focus on world class research is present at all Curtin campuses. As we like to say, it is “One Curtin” no matter which campus a student choses.

How does Curtin plan on filling the skills gap in the jobs market of the next decade and beyond?

Dubai is a unique destination attracting many highly esteemed international universities due to the rapid growth of the UAE population, the safety and stability of the UAE, and the excellent higher education regulatory framework established by the Dubai Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). As such a great education hub, Dubai attracts top students from around the world. Curtin Dubai has conducted research on the current and projected skill gaps in the region and worldwide, and has designed the course rollout to address these needs.  By making these course available to top students from around the world, Curtin Dubai will prepare many generations for the jobs of the future.
