Northern Beaches Christian School is one of a few worldwide examples of a school that demonstrates that change is both necessary and possible – a change in paradigm, in learning space design and in the way we empower students to take charge of their own learning. NBCS is a vibrant, independent, co-educational school in Terrey Hills (Sydney), offering a dynamic, student-centred education from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Our approach is a dual focus on learning and opportunity. We have been very intentional in fostering a culture of self-directed, student-led learning – growing students to be high-capacity leaders and creative thinkers. Strong, positive relationships are the cornerstone to learning at NBCS, with authentic community and true collaboration being the foundation on which learning is built.

Since 2004, Northern Beaches Christian School has been an independent organisation, led by an independent Board of Directors as a not-for-profit entity. Both the Board and the Senior Leadership Team hold firm to a vision to be leaders in transforming education, creating a school that empowers students with high-level skills – equipped and inspired to be life-long learners.

NBCS places a high mandate on vision and leadership. We seek to develop core leadership skills and principles in all staff and students – being pro-active in creating new opportunities for leadership capacity and capability to be nurtured and unleashed. Our approach to leadership is highly collaborative. At every level, collaboration is expected, encouraged, and modelled.

Whilst the Board has responsibility for the over-all vision, direction and financial management of the school, responsibility for moving vision to comprehensive strategy and the effective daily functioning of the school is the role of the Principal, supported by the Senior Leadership Team.

As a community we talk about the ‘closed hand’ and ‘open hand’. There are elements that we hold tightly, important tenets of the Christian faith, as expressed in the Nicene Creed. There is also diversity in lived experience of faith today amongst those who profess to be Christian, and these are held less tightly.

The care and concern shown by our teachers toward students and our pastoral care program is grounded in our shared faith, reflecting Christian values. At NBCS, we understand that not all families share this world view for themselves, but they do accept and support the School in this and appreciate the level of care shown to their child.

In the everyday life at NBCS, the students experience Christian input and are encouraged to consider a personal faith in Jesus Christ. They start each day with their Student Team Leader or Class Teacher, participate in ‘Big Questions’ classes exploring faith and life, and take service learning opportunities through our Global Opportunities program, which includes selected students in Years 10 and 11 participating in the annual GO Rwanda project trips.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come
