The American School in Japan is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an accreditation agency for public, independent, church-related and proprietary schools in California, Hawaii and East Asia.

Founded in 1902, The American School in Japan was started by a dynamic group of women who recognized the need for a school among the growing foreign community. Beginning life in rented rooms in the Kanda YMCA, the Tokyo School for Foreign Children, as it was then known, quickly attracted a growing numbers of students from around the world and soon needed to move to a more permanent home in Tsukiji. The school survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and continued to expand and outgrew the Foreign Settlement moving to Meguro. After closing during the war years, the school reopened in 1946 to support the military and civilian families present in post-war Tokyo.

Every six years, ASIJ is required to participate in a WASC self-study with a mid-term review every three years. This self-study focuses on a learning protocol and determines the strengths and weaknesses of the school, resulting in a six-year action plan.

ASIJ completed its most recent self-study in 2014 and has currently aligned its action plan with the school's strategic objectives. In 2017, the school underwent a mid-cycle review where the progress of the growth goals were monitored and reaffirmed for the remainder of this six-year cycle.

In the classroom, students use their varied backgrounds and cultures to share different ideas and perspectives, fostering an international school community based on respect and tolerance for one another. ASIJ's students are pro-active, engaged and creative learners.

ASIJ supports a variety of professional development activities for faculty, promoting a learning community where the teaching profession’s “best practices” flourish. Professional development opportunities allow teachers to explore numerous programs and conferences both locally and internationally and on average over 20 teachers complete summer study programs each year.

A wide variety of support services operate every day at ASIJ to help create a secure, safe and well-maintained environment for students, parents and faculty. Services range from campus security to food service and medical care.

Elementary School lunch - A hot, set lunch is served every day that includes a protein entrée, soup and choice of fruit, vegetable and beverage (fruit juices, full or low-fat milk, green or oolong tea, water). Each set lunch contains between 525-700 calories. Onigiri (rice balls), bagels and fruit are also sold to supplement the set lunch, and for the convenience of students bringing their own lunch. Approximately half the elementary students eat school lunch and half bring lunch from home. The cafeteria also has microwave ovens ready to warm lunches brought from home.

ASIJ’s mission of “developing compassionate, inquisitive learners prepared for global responsibility” provides a foundation for our academic program. The curriculum is guided by American and internationally recognized curriculum standards and is designed to foster academic excellence, creativity and individuality. Class sizes and support structures ensure there is opportunity for individualized instruction — an important part of ASIJ's emphasis on teaching to the whole person and attention to students' unique strengths and needs.

In the studio and on stage ASIJ student artists achieve excellence across a wide spectrum of arts activities. Supported by our dedicated art, music and theater faculty and the Friends of the Fine Arts (FOFA) and PTA, our students regularly put on show-stopping performances of everything from musical theater to traditional Japanese arts such as kyogen and taiko drumming. The ASIJ Theater and Black Box play host to numerous concerts, performances and events each year that range from the elementary handbell concert and the middle school play to the high school’s Broadway-style spring musical.

ASIJ's extensive athletics program takes advantage of our outstanding facilities and talented coaches to promote a healthy, active lifestyle for students. A wide range of athletics activities and intramural sports provide students with the opportunity to engage in different activities during each of the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. Students are encouraged to make selections based upon their abilities and interests and our program emphasizes the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual growth.

We hope you are enjoying your visit to the ASIJ website, where you can find not only general school information, but hear our students and faculty speak about the ASIJ experience. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to explore the divisional pages and About ASIJ pages to learn about the incredible range of opportunities that ASIJ offers our students who come from more than 37 countries. Prospective parents will also be interested in information about parent involvement at ASIJ.
