Founded in 1904, Marshall School is Duluth’s flagship independent day and boarding school, inspiring lifelong learners who explore, learn, lead, and transform. Rooted in integrity, compassion, respect, self-discipline, and intellectual curiosity, Marshall prepares students for college and beyond through strong academic habits and meaningful experiences.
Safety and well-being are central to the Marshall boarding experience. Marshall House offers a secure, welcoming, and supportive community of just 34 domestic and international students. All meals are included, with accommodations for Halal, Kosher, gluten-free, and other preferences. Boarding students participate in planned activities, transportation, and have the option to remain on campus during school breaks. Living in this close-knit environment allows students to form lasting friendships and fully engage in school life with confidence and peace of mind.
With small classes (average class size of 11) and dedicated teachers, students engage in AP and College in the Schools courses, hands-on chemistry research with University of Minnesota Duluth professors, and Scholars Programs in STEM, outdoor leadership, social entrepreneurship, justice, and law. Upper School students gain experience as Nature-Based Learning Practitioners by supporting K–4 Forest School students in immersive outdoor education. Ninth graders participate in Menogyn, a leadership and personal development program that fosters growth, resilience, and community-building. Innovative programs like iTerm—an intensive, two-week experiential learning period—and Senior Projects provide real-world, hands-on opportunities for exploration and growth.
Students pursue a variety of co-curriculars, including activities such as athletics, arts, STEM, and leadership. Athletics include soccer, hockey, baseball, softball, lacrosse, dance, volleyball, basketball, golf, cross country, track, Nordic and alpine skiing, and tennis. Competing as the Marshall Hilltoppers in gold and black, our teams have earned numerous state championships. Signature co-curriculars include Hilltop Harmonics (Orchestra), Chamber Singers, Jazz Band, Robotics (a world-qualifying team), and Student Council, providing leadership opportunities and avenues for creative and intellectual engagement.
Life in Duluth, Minnesota, complements the Marshall experience. Students enjoy a vibrant college town with nearby malls, theaters, arcades, coffee shops, and outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, and Lake Superior activities.
With 98% of graduates directly matriculating into universities across the U.S. and internationally, Marshall alumni consistently highlight the strength of our 1:1 college counseling program. Students receive support with SAT/ACT preparation, college essay writing, and individualized guidance for college selection. Graduates go on to Big Ten universities, Midwest private colleges, Ivy League institutions, and other top universities in the U.S. and abroad, including McGill University. Alumni consistently note how Marshall’s rigorous college-prep curriculum and personalized support prepared them to thrive in higher education and beyond.
