High-quality secondary education teachers focus on helping young adults reach their full potential. They're also often important role models guiding, mentoring and supporting students through what can be an exciting but also challenging time in their lives. If you already have an undergraduate degree and are interested in secondary education, this graduate-entry course will provide the skills and qualifications you need to teach in secondary school or work in associated fields such as curriculum planning, educational research or policy development.

Key Features

  • Your first bachelor degree or equivalent must contain an appropriate academic major (or at least six undergraduate units of study) relevant to the following areas: economics and/or business studies, English, geography, history, languages, maths and/or science.
  • This course includes an academic stream comprising units in education, and a professional stream comprising units in curriculum, methodology and supervised school experience.
  • It can be completed in two years full-time after credit for previous studies is granted.
  • During the school-based professional experience component, you're supervised and assessed by an experienced classroom teacher who acts as a mentor. This practical experience enables you to develop a long-term relationship with your allocated school community.
  • Macquarie is a leader in educational research, giving you access to the latest techniques and tools to start your career.

What You'll Study

Part of what makes Macquarie future focused is that we allow you the freedom to explore your interests across a range of areas, rather than lock you in to a single, narrow field. So follow your passions and tailor your course to your needs and interests.

Units

Units are what we call subjects. Most full-time students take four units – each worth a fixed number of credit points – per session.

Entry Requirements

For students from overseas, Macquarie uses an international selection rank to determine the minimum eligibility requirement for each undergraduate course. This rank has been converted into equivalent scores for various recognised international high school qualifications and university entrance examinations, including global qualifications like the International Baccalaureate (IB) and GCE A-Levels.

English Language Requirements

All applicants for undergraduate coursework studies at Macquarie University are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English.

You may satisfy the English language requirements if you have completed:

  • Senior secondary studies equivalent to the NSW HSC
  • One year of Australian or comparable tertiary study in a country of qualification

Alternative entry

At Macquarie, we are all about success. With our International Academic Entry Program, we recognise your individual strengths, interests, and personal circumstances. If you have not achieved the overall score required for your program, but demonstrate particular strength in relevant subjects, we may consider you for alternative entry.
