The University’s mission is the creation, dissemination and curation of knowledge. As a world-leading centre of academic excellence we aim to:

  • Enhance our position as one of the world’s leading research and teaching universities and to measure our performance against the highest international standards
  • Provide the highest quality learning and teaching environment for the greater wellbeing of our students
  • Produce graduates fully equipped to achieve the highest personal and professional standards
  • Make a significant, sustainable and socially responsible contribution to Scotland, the UK and the world, promoting health and economic and cultural wellbeing.

As a great civic university, Edinburgh especially values its intellectual and economic relationship with the Scottish community that forms its base and provides the foundation from which it will continue to look to the widest international horizons, enriching both itself and Scotland.

The University of Edinburgh has been notified of the proposed strike action by University and College Union (UCU), which will involve a number of strike days over a four week period. This is a national dispute which centres on proposals to amend the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension scheme.

Living in Edinburgh with one of the best universities in the world, Edinburgh also tops the list for atmosphere, positive reputation and desirability, beating off competition from London and York. The capital also fairs well in terms of cultural experience, safety for visitors, cuisine and variety of shops.

With our rich history, noted alumni and distinguished scholars, we have much to be proud of in our many centuries as a world-renowned university. From Nobel laureates and Olympic champions to space explorers and prime ministers, the University of Edinburgh has been influencing history since it opened the gates to its first students in 1583. We are the home of Britain’s oldest literary awards, the James Tait Black Prizes and Dolly the sheep, the first animal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell.

It was also here at the University of Edinburgh that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to create his notorious character, Sherlock Holmes and James Young Simpson pioneered anaethetics through his discovery of the properties of chloroform. More recently, theoretical physicist and Professor Emeritus Peter Higgs was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his 1964 prediction of the Higgs Boson. Through the many achievements of its staff and students, the University has continued to present cutting-edge research, inspirational teaching and innovative thinking as its central ethos, attracting some of the greatest minds from around the globe.

The University of Edinburgh has not only enriched my child's knowledge but also fostered their confidence, all thanks to the dedicated staff who truly care about student success.

The professors here (for my program at least) were great! But then the strike came and it showed me how little the school cares about the students. They have done nothing to help us out and we were left to complete our degree on our own. On top of that, the student accommodation is overpriced. Good luck getting anyone here to actually care about your education.

Avoid this university at all cost. Architecture department is full of people who just want to get their cheque paid at the end of the month. Filled with racist, hypocrite, unfriendly and extremely pointless competition among staff and students.

Good stafffs, good faculty members. The only complaint is the material of its certificate which is too thin and does not look classy at all, try using a thicker paper please.

Great university with great people and a very good vibe. The campus is also located in the city center so it's very convenient. A beautiful city to study in.

I'm in an online master program (DDPB), it's a waste of money, effort, and time! No matter how much you complain, they just don't care! They only care at time of payment. The number of worthless courses along the program is much greater than the valuable ones! You pay a lot per course and at its end, no value gained! Online learning here is a disaster!

I worked at this university for nine years and eight months until April 2016. At first when I started working here I was as proud as I could have been working at one of the top universities within the UK. However, as time progressed it became absolutely hell to work for this institution. I worked within Central Biological Services within the corporate services. I was an animal research technician, it was my job to look after the animals that were having research done on them. Throughout my time working here I saw many things that should not have happened, including animals being glued to the side of their cage after having their tails cut off, animals not being given food or water for days and almost dying, animals being put into airtight spaces after having major surgery and forgotten about for more than 48hrs and many other things. Having brought some of these situations to managements attention I was threatened with the prospect of loosing my job. After finding some rats with no food and water and in a very sick condition in March 2016 and this being covered up and myself being bullied to keep quiet about it I decided to resign in April 2016. Subsequently the university did an investigation into this after I had left which was a complete whitewash which I in turn then dissected and found that the staff who were interviewed were infact asked loaded questions. This investigation was such a farce that the university then employed an independent QC to investigate, they have as yet declined to share this report with me. I know that in this report other staff have came forward and told of their own distressing situations- including one member of staff being stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors and being bullied into not reporting it by his manager. There is at least two members of staff that have been so distressed by their employment with this institution that they have came close to committing suicide and are now on very strong anti-depressants - myself being one of them. In my view- this university is more about making money and power, rather than looking after its staff or the animals it does research on.

My MSc was an excellent learning experience with a knowledgeable and supporting faculty. The best part of the program was the opportunity to learn and discuss many topics with classmates from around the world. Highly recommend.

Spent a day here on business with a friend (who is a member of faculty). Absolutely wonderful campus - everywhere I explored during my time there was both interesting and impressive. If the staff are any indication of the quality of the university degrees, this is a great place to study (and to work!)... lovely architecture. Timeless.
