Job Summary
A full-time associate professor position is available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo. The Department of Chemistry is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department of Chemistry is ranked as the premier academic research institute in chemistry in Norway with a broad educational offer of high quality, as well as top, international-level research.
The associate professor is expected to actively take part in the Section of Environmental Sciences (SMV) and the Department of Chemistry. The main scientific activities of the SMV relate to research and teaching within the disciplines of environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, as well as physical, nuclear and analytical chemistry. The SMV research focuses on biogeochemical processes in the environment, chemical dynamics and kinetics, development of analytical instrumentation and chemical methods for urban mining. The section presently has a core staff of 4 faculty members and a number of PhDs and postdocs.
Qualification requirements
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of sustaining its role as a leading research faculty. Candidates for this position will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment with respect to academic credentials.
- The successful candidate must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian Ph.D. in chemistry.
- The candidate should document practical and theoretical competence in relevant analytical techniques (eg. MS, ICP-MS, IC, spectroscopy etc.), experience with environmental sample collection, preparation, fractionation and speciation.
- The candidate should have insight into biogeochemical processes in the environment.
- A scientific track record that confirms the candidate’s capacity to address relevant and challenging issues. The main emphasis will be placed on documented scientific qualifications, including scientific independence.
- Emphasis will be put on the candidate’s scientific production from the last five years.
- Teaching experience is an important factor in the evaluation and should be well documented in a teaching portfolio. The applicant should describe her/his qualifications in view of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)-criteria:
- Focus on the students’ learning
- A definite development over time
- A research attitude to teaching and learning
- A collegial attitude and practice
- The ability of the candidate in obtaining external research grants, either as a single applicant or as a co-applicant should be documented.
- Further, international network, outreach activities and the ability to create a good working environment and operate in a team will be part of the evaluation criteria.

- A description (maximum 3 pages, as a separate file) providing the aim, goal, interest and motivation of applicant’s intended field/topic of research, including a research plan as well as a brief description on how the applicants experience and research could help in developing the science of the Department of Chemistry, the SMV and the CBA. This should also include a description of potential collaboration with future colleagues
- Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
