Children have been educated at Wells Cathedral School for over a thousand years, in what has to be one of the world’s most beautiful and inspiring locations.

But while a sense of place provides something crucial as a child grows up and learns about themselves and the world in which they live, it is even more important that every child feels comfortable and secure enough to be able to discern, explore and test their own talents and interests.

Grounded in a timeless tradition and ethos since its origins as a Chorister School, yet adept enough to relish the challenges of the 21st century, Wells Cathedral School provides an encouraging and ambitious education for every child.

Whether your son or daughter is in the Sixth Form, Senior, Music, Junior or Nursery School, We believe all children’s school days should be filled with opportunities to explore a range of interests and ideas; some will stick, some won’t, but all experiences are valuable and formative.

At Wells we give our pupils numerous opportunities to discover and nurture individual passions, in turn propelling them into a successful and fulfilling life beyond school. We are interested in the education of the whole child, so that our pupils become thoughtful, confident, articulate, creative and caring individuals.

The website provides you with an introduction to the wonderful education we offer to our pupils at Wells Cathedral School. Ordinarily, we would also be very keen to invite you to come and see the School yourselves and to meet us. However, since we are unable to accept visitors to the site at the moment, we have prepared a Virtual Tour of our Senior School and Junior School (please see below). We also would be delighted to meet with you ‘virtually’ – please contact our Admissions Department to set up an appointment. And as soon as we are open again physically do please come and see us!

Our school is comprised of a dynamic mix of boys and girls aged 2-18 who have a variety of talents across our various school stages: Little Wellies Nursery, Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form which are complemented by our Specialist Music Faculty. Our core belief and motto Esto Quod Es (Be What You Are) is what ties our school together and lends itself to a happy, stimulating environment where all our pupils can thrive and develop their talents or even discover new ones.

All of our pupils live as part of an accepting community where being friends with people with extraordinary talents is accepted as the norm. We invite everyone to ‘give it a go’ so pupils of all abilities can join in at a level that suits them and make the most of all we have to offer so that they can become the best they can be. Everyone has a refreshing sense of mutual respect for each other, whatever their interests and talents.

We provide a wide range of opportunities to support everybody to be the best versions of themselves so they can develop their existing talents and discover new ones. Wells offers a:

  • proven track record in academic excellence
  • specialist music scheme
  • specialist mathematics scheme
  • wide range of co-curricular opportunities to choose from
  • strong creative arts programme, ranging from dance, music, art, drama and more
  • wide range of competitive and recreational sports
  • programme of outdoor education opportunities, including Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, in addition to the school’s own 909 programme.

We are always open to new ideas and will do our best to accommodate your interests if you’d like something we don’t currently offer.

We ensure that there is an appropriate mixture of structure and freedom to suit each pupil from their early days in the Junior School through to the end of their time with us in the Sixth Form, which offers excellent preparation for further education or future careers. With this in mind, our flexibility enables all our pupils to make the most of their time at school and establishes a brilliant foundation to build on as an adult. This might mean some pupils take more GCSEs or A levels than others; whilst some pupils spend more time developing in a specific field. We don’t have a “one size fits all” mentality; we have a “let’s work out what’s best for your future” mentality.
