More than 34,800 Grade 12 students across the UAE started their end-of-year exams remotely from home on Sunday.

Final exams for the students in public and private schools that follow the Ministry of Education’s curriculum, will run until June 29. The tests are being held via the distance-learning modes and systems, said authorities.

This is the first time in the history of secondary schools in the UAE that students perform their final exams online. The initiative is part of the distance learning system launched by the ministry after all schools closed in March as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The ministry said the students across public and private schools are attending the final examinations for general and advanced tracks, as well as academic and home study.

On Monday, students sat for their Social Studies paper and they will be performing the Arabic language test on Tuesday.

Students undertaking the general track and the academic and home study will sit for their Biology and Chemistry papers on Wednesday, while students under the advanced track will take their Chemistry examination the same day.

Students on all tracks will sit for their English language exam on June 25, while the Mathematics test will be held on June 28. Islamic Studies exam will be conducted on June 29, the final day of the exams.

Each examination, according to the ministry, has a duration of 60 minutes, while each question has a set time limit that appears as a timer next to each question.

The ministry noted that students must ensure that they answer each question within the set time-frame, before moving on to the next question.

Education authorities explained that students can’t answer a question or amend their answer once the allotted time is over. Once a student moves on to the next question, they cannot return to the previous question.

The ministry had directed schools to form a virtual control team to ensure that students attend the tests in a conducive environment – free from obstacles – and to provide psychological, technical and academic support.

Meanwhile, the Education and Human Resources Council has lauded the efforts of the ministry, educational and teaching bodies from across the emirates, private schools and universities and the cooperation shown by parents and students in the success of the remote learning system till the end of the current academic year.
