10 Back to School Tips for Parents (Coronavirus)

There’s no doubt that returning to schools in 2020 will be drastically different from previous years. As Covid-19 continues to spread, schools across the world have implemented safety measures so that students, teachers and staff are safe while we battle the Coronavirus pandemic. As parents, it’s understandable to feel concerned and anxious about the safety of your children as they make their way back to crowded classrooms and playgrounds.

We’ve created a checklist for parents so that you can ensure your child’s safety from the minute they leave the house.

1. Face Masks or Coverings

Ensure you have an adequate supply of face masks or covering for your children. Encourage children to take a spare mask with them to school in case their mask breaks or gets dirty.

2. Hand Sanitizer

Children may not be able to wash their hands every hour or so. Make sure your children have their own personal sanitizer so that they can clean their hands after touching surfaces.

3. Personal Stationery

Make sure that your children carry their own books and stationery. Stock up on essentials (pens, pencils, erasers, etc.) so that your children don’t need to possibly borrow them from other students.

4. Tissue

Encourage your kids to carry their own stash of tissue so that they avoid having to use a publicly shared tissue box. Travel-sized tissue packets will come in handy!

5. Anti-bacterial Wipes

Anti-bacterial wipes are also handy to have in school! Children will be touching all kinds of surfaces when they’re in school but they can make sure they’re staying safe by wiping down surfaces before using them.

6. Water Bottle

Drinking from the water fountain may not be possible anymore so your child must carry their own insulated water bottle!

7. Packed Lunch

Packing a lunch from home for your children will prevent them from standing in queues to get externally packed lunches. It will be safer to pack them lunch from home!

8. Vaccinations

Ensure your children are up-to-date with all the recommended vaccines, including the flu vaccine. This is vital to ensure their safety as it’s not clear whether catching the flu while being sick with Covid-19 would result in more severe illness.

9. Update Emergency Contacts

Check with your children’s schools whether your contact information is updated within their systems in case of an emergency.

10. Educate Children

It’s important that you educate your children on the importance of being safe while at school. Younger children may not understand fully why they need to keep physical distance from their friends or why they need to wear a mask often – you must take the time to teach them about the safety guidelines and help them understand why these measures are put into place.
