This comes amid the ongoing regional escalations as a result of the US-Israel-Iran war
India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has cancelled several Class 10 board examinations scheduled in the Middle East, while postponing a Class 12 exam scheduled for March 7, citing the prevailing situation in parts of the region.
In a circular dated March 5, the board informed Principals of schools in Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE of this decision to cancel all board exams for Class 10 students in the Middle East region scheduled to take place between March 7 and March 11.
This comes amid the ongoing regional escalations as a result of the US-Israel-Iran war. Examinations scheduled for March 2, March 5, and March 6, which were earlier postponed, have also been cancelled. According to the circular, the mode of result declaration for Class 10 students in the region will be notified separately.
Meanwhile, the examination scheduled for Class 12 students on Saturday, March 7, has been postponed, and the revised dates will be announced later. After reviewing the situation on Saturday, the board will issue further directives about the Class 12 examinations scheduled for Monday, March 9 onwards. All the Class 12 students have been advised to remain in close contact with their schools and follow official announcements carefully.
Some Class 10 students had finished up to four exams, including Maths, Science, Data Science and English, before the remaining were cancelled after war broke out in the region on Saturday. Meanwhile, some Class 12 students had completed two or more exams, depending on their chosen stream.
The exams, which began on February 17, were written by thousands of students worldwide. It was the first since the system’s assessment method was significantly changed. Under the new system, CBSE students can take an exam twice in the same academic year to improve their grades. The first exams in February are mandatory, while the second set in May is optional. Previously, board exams were held in March, and students had only one chance to take them.
This year also marks the first time that the board is introducing On-Screen Marking (OSM) for evaluating Class 12 answer books, a shift that many say will make the process faster, more transparent, and more consistent.
