All you need to know about Emirates ID (2025 Guide)

What is an Emirates ID?It is the main identification or resident card of all UAE citizens and residents. It is a personal database of every resident in the UAE which must be carried at all times. The Emirates Identification Authority (EIDA) issues the Emirates ID. The card has an electronic chip containing important information about the resident, which includes basic details, photo, and biometric data or fingerprints.

The Emirates ID card can be used in several transactions such as phone and internet, paying utility bills, paying fines, and registering vehicles. Soon, it will also take the place of your debit card and driving license. In 2016, the Emirates ID has also replaced health insurance cards.

How to Obtain an Emirates ID?

Follow this step-by-step guide to get an Emirates ID:

1. Application

You need to first complete an application form. This can be done online here or at an approved typing office. Tas’heel services are the preferred locations, although many typing offices are also eligible (see map). The fee is 30 AED.

2. Visit EIDA

After your form has been submitted, you will receive an SMS directly to your phone. This will state a date and time, as well as the location of the EIDA branch you must visit.

At the EIDA office, you will have your photo taken as well as be asked for your fingerprints. You will be given a receipt that you must retain in order to collect your card when it is ready.

You will need to take with you the following required documents:

UAE Nationals

  • Family book
  • Valid passport
  • Emirates ID application

UAE Residents

  • Passport
  • Visa (or visa work permit)
  • Emirates ID application

3. Pay Fees

The Emirates ID costs 100 AED per year of validity.

4. Tracking

After you register, you can track your application by typing the account number in EIDA’s website – select ID Card Status.

5. Delivery & collection

After processing your work visa, the ID card will be sent to a local post office. You will be notified by SMS directly to your phone, although you can still check the status online. Note that you need to collect your Emirates ID in 90 days or it will be returned to EIDA and discarded.

6. Renewal

When your Emirates ID expires, you need to follow the same procedures for renewal. This site is where you can renew your ID card.

Important Information about the Emirates ID

Carry your card

As mentioned above, it is a legal requirement for all nationals and residents to carry their Emirates ID cards at all times. Failure to present your card when asked by the Police could land you in trouble.

Lost card

As it is a legal requirement to carry your Emirates ID with you at all times, you must replace a lost card as soon as possible and apply for a new one.

Changing your name

If you get married and change your name, you need to notify EIDA.

Children

Everyone in the UAE must have an Emirates ID card including children and newborn babies.

Wrong details

Once the correct details are there, mistakes can be made. If you notice any of your details are incorrect, you must visit your nearest EIDA office and take proof of the correct details.
