Ampleforth offers a Compass for Life.

We educate the whole person, enabling each student to discover their interests and strengths, fulfil their academic potential, and learn what they can contribute to the world.

Our welcoming community, rooted in Benedictine values, cherishes each individual’s unique contribution and transforms us into better people through our shared life together and our service to each other.

Students learn how to think independently, express themselves, and have the confidence to lead, while being compassionate and working well with others. Equipped with the skills and mindset needed to flourish, they are inspired to be thoughtful, courageous, and proactive members of society.

Our focus is on providing an excellent and vibrant education which challenges and inspires pupils to actively participate in the richness of all that we offer and enthuse them with a love of learning.

We live in a time when the transformative nature of St Benedict’s teachings provide a notably contemporary response to the needs of our young people. They are encouraged to have the highest expectations of themselves in a world that too often values the superficial and the easy path. They learn to give of themselves, to listen to and serve others, to reflect, and to seek the truth.

Our strength comes from the whole Ampleforth community, working together and appreciating and encouraging everyone’s talents and contributions.

Mission, Ethos & Values

Our Mission Statement
An Ampleforth Education is an invitation to young people to discover the value and the purpose of life, by entering into a transforming encounter with Christ through active participation in the life of a living Christian Community.

What does our Mission mean for our school community?

"Who here yearns for life?" (qui vult vitam), (Prologue to the Rule of St Benedict)

"Christ is alive! He is our hope, and in a wonderful way he brings youth to our world, and everything he touches becomes young, new, full of life. The very first words, then, that I would like to say…are these: Christ is alive and he wants you to be alive!", (Pope Francis to Young People, 2019)

We believe life is the wholehearted and free gift of people who matter to God and to each other.

We draw our inspiration from:

  • The Gospel: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (Jn 10:10)

We stand in the tradition of:

  • St Benedict, whose name means ‘the one who is blessed’ and ‘the one who blesses.’

The power of an Ampleforth Education is that it is not first of all taught, but lived, shared, and embodied in service: a family that grows and flourishes through cherishing the unique gift of each and every girl’s and boy’s life and future; and accepting responsibility for each other by the mutual blessing of a deep accompaniment.

Our Benedictine Ethos
Our founders and neighbours, the Benedictine monks of Ampleforth Abbey, bestowed a character and purpose to our Catholic educational mission which is more compelling in today’s transactional and commoditised world than ever before.

Benedictine life is woven into everything we do here, permeating far more deeply than just formal acts of worship. Our students learn how they can become better people through our shared life together and wanting the best for each other. They develop a strong sense of respect for - and service to - others.

Ampleforth College offers a transformative experience, a journey of self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and self-giving. Students recognise their own unique talents, realise that we grow and learn from our differences, and that we all have something to offer. Amplefordians are inspired to be grounded, discerning, thoughtful, compassionate and proactive members of society. They contribute and do good in the world.
