At BIS Abu Dhabi we don’t just teach answers, we teach thinking

Artificial intelligence is transforming the world at an unprecedented pace. From virtual assistants and personalised recommendations to advanced problem-solving tools, AI is becoming part of everyday life and is expected to play an increasingly significant role in the careers our children will pursue in the future.

As technology continues to evolve, many parents are asking an important question: how can schools prepare students for a world increasingly shaped by AI?

At The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi), we believe the answer goes beyond teaching students how to use technology. The real challenge is helping young people develop the human skills that technology cannot replicate.

Human Skills Matter More Than Ever

While AI can generate information in seconds, it cannot replace qualities such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, empathy and ethical judgement.

In a world where information is instantly accessible, success depends less on knowing answers and more on understanding how to question, analyse and evaluate information. Students need to think independently, solve unfamiliar problems and adapt confidently to change.

This belief sits at the heart of our educational approach. As part of Nord Anglia Education, the school is contributing to a landmark global research collaboration with Boston College exploring how metacognition -the ability to understand and regulate one’s own thinking- helps students become more effective learners.

The findings have been encouraging. Our teachers report that students are becoming more confident in explaining their thinking, evaluating their work and adjusting their approaches when faced with challenges. Many also observed significant growth in curiosity, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.

These are exactly the capabilities that will help young people thrive in a future where AI is increasingly present across every industry.

Learning How to Think, Not What to Think

One of the most valuable lessons schools can teach today is how to think deeply and independently.

Through carefully designed thinking routines and reflective learning practices, students learn to make their thinking visible. They are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, consider multiple perspectives and reflect on their learning processes.

This approach develops intellectual confidence and resilience. Rather than simply seeking the correct answer, students learn how to evaluate information, refine their understanding and continue learning throughout their lives.

These metacognitive skills are becoming increasingly important as AI tools make information more accessible than ever before.

Using Technology to Enhance Learning

Technology can make learning more engaging, interactive and meaningful when introduced with purpose.

At our school, technology is part of a wider learning environment designed to inspire curiosity and support deeper thinking. Our Creative Technology Zone exemplifies this philosophy. Designed as a flexible, high-specification learning space, it allows students to move seamlessly between independent exploration, collaboration and problem-solving.

The environment reflects the adaptable, innovative workplaces found in leading technology organisations, where creativity and teamwork are essential. Through access to advanced digital tools and emerging technologies, students develop confidence, technical fluency and the practical skills needed to navigate a rapidly changing world.

However, technology is only one part of the equation. The most meaningful learning still comes from excellent teaching, strong relationships and purposeful discussion. Technology enhances learning, but it is people who bring learning to life.

Developing Responsible Digital Citizens

As AI becomes more accessible, digital literacy is more important than ever.

Students need to understand not only how to use AI tools, but also how to evaluate the information they produce, identify potential bias and assess the reliability of sources. Equally important is an understanding of the ethical questions surrounding emerging technologies, from privacy and transparency to fairness and human accountability.

This balance forms part of the school’s commitment to responsible innovation. An internal working group is exploring both the ethical implications of AI and its practical applications in education. This work will help ensure that technology supports learning while remaining aligned with our values and educational priorities.

Preparing for a Future We Cannot Yet Predict

No one can say with certainty what the workplace will look like in twenty years’ time. Many of today’s students will eventually work in careers that do not yet exist.

What we do know is that adaptability, resilience and a commitment to lifelong learning will be essential. Future success will depend not on competing with AI, but on understanding how to work alongside it effectively.

Because in the age of AI, knowing the answer is no longer enough.

The real advantage lies in knowing how to think.
