Bacon’s College offers a commitment to high achievement within a community of care underpinned by Christian values. The College encourages the development of the moral and spiritual well-being of students, alongside their academic success.

Our vision at Bacon’s is to raise the achievement and improve the life chances of our students and to serve our community by providing access to a range of activities, first class resources and opportunities. As a Church of England school, we encourage the development of our students’ moral and spiritual well-being alongside their academic success.

We are inclusive of all faiths, as well as none, and support unity between different religions, cultures and beliefs. All our students are individuals and every student is valued for their uniqueness and the skills and aptitudes they bring to the College. A key strength of Bacon’s College is the very high quality relationships that exist between members of a highly diverse school community - the College has a strong ethos that is shared by all.

Bacon’s College values the distinctive nature of its ethos to which every member of its community contributes. It celebrates the differences that define it as well as the common humanity that unites all its members. The value system and ethos of Bacon’s is inclusive of all within a strong Christian ethos, characterised by the quality and openness of the relationships between students, staff and the wider community.

The College values the integration and incorporation of the emotional health programme into the Worship and Citizenship programme and believes that its ethos has been strengthened as a result. It still promotes the centrality of worship and is proud of the committed and reflective attitude of its students to this key aspect of its ethos. Partnerships with the community, both local and international continue to develop and flourish, to which the annual advent appeal for Centrepoint bears eloquent witness.

British values are at the forefront of all we do at the College. Through their day to day experience of the College students develop:

  • An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process
  • An understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law
  • An acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour
  • An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination

The College curriculum is designed to provide our students with a broad and balanced range of subjects whilst maintaining a focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. The College’s specialism in Digital Media Technology is also strongly represented both in specialist subject lessons as well as through the support of learning in other subjects.

During Years 7, 8 and 9, in addition to the core subjects students study art, design, drama, geography, history, ICT, a modern foreign language, music, physical education and religious education. They will also follow a number of programmes to support the development of their economic and personal wellbeing.

Students are prepared for a range of appropriate public examinations during Years 10 and 11 with the core subjects being supplemented by a range of other subjects. The College also works with other local educational providers, principally Lewisham College, to offer a broader range of vocational courses.

The majority of our Year 11 students choose to remain at Bacon’s for their 6th form studies, preferring to continue working in an environment where they know their teachers and their teachers know them. They are joined by students from other schools who choose to join Bacon’s and benefit from the education provided. The College offers a broad range of A level and level 3 vocational courses all of which can lead to successful university entrance or on to employment with further training.

Bacon's College is part of United Learning. United Learning is a group of schools which aims to provide excellent education to children and young people across the country. We seek to improve the life chances of all the children and young people we serve and make it our mission to bring out the best in everyone. Together, we are one of the country’s leading education providers, currently educating over 40,000.

The “golden rules” of the College promote respect for others and take as their starting point “do unto others as you would have them do to you” from Jesus’ sermon on the mount

Our behaviour policy establishes a clear use of rewards and sanctions when appropriate and the staff gives a clear reason why they are being given out. Positive behaviour to and from school is reinforced by SLT presence in the local community.
