Barking Abbey School Is a Very Large School on Two Campuses in East London that Serves the Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge.
We are a non-selective, comprehensive twelve form entry school with a proud tradition of academic and sporting success. The school is very popular in the local community for both Year 7 and sixth form admissions and is heavily oversubscribed.
Barking Abbey School was founded in 1922 as one of the first co-educational grammar schools in England at the site in Longbridge Road. At the time, it was situated in a largely rural area, with fields and farmland close by. Gradually, as Barking began to expand as a residential centre, the school became the focal point for the community with an educational provision of national standing.
Our motto ‘give and expect the best’ means that we strive for excellence in everything that we do. we try hard each and every day to improve opportunities for our pupils and we expect them to try hard in all that they do.
My commitment to our pupils and their families is;
We are one of the most oversubscribed schools in the area both at GCSE and A level due to our academic success and with our expanded roll and new facilities on each campus we expect to become even more popular.
As well as our academic success we have our BEST habits Character Education curriculum. We want our pupils to be self-disciplined, independent and confident adults and so we deliver a programme of lessons from year 7 to 13 with the aim of equipping all of our pupils with the skills they need to be successful in their lives.
We have deliberately chosen to structure our school with two smaller campuses with the same high standards on each. This is to ensure that we get the chance to know all of our students and so that our students can say they belong to the Barking Abbey family.
Ofsted recognised that we could be judged outstanding when they visited in December 2022. They recognised our welcoming, diverse and inclusive community where safeguarding is prioritised and pupils learn and achieve very well. They commented that our teachers feel listened to and well supported and the Governing body is very ambitious for the school.

I'm a pupil here and I love the school. It has a great educational curriculum and your are taught by highly quilified teachers who are firm but fair to ensure you learn happily. The school has a huge playground which consists of, in lower school, a large field for football and relaxing, a canteen block, there is also a large area of concrete with ping ping takes and space for students to bring equipment to play baseball. There are also 8 basketball hoops and a long jump area. This is a great school a very good school.
