Welcome to Bessemer Grange Primary School. Bessemer Grange is a special place where we are dedicated to providing a stimulating, exciting environment where everyone feels valued and safe, ideas can flourish and pupils can realise their full potential.
By providing a well structured and engaging curriculum, and by promoting good behaviour through our Golden Rules, we aim to enthuse in all children a love of learning as well as respect and care for each other.
Whatever the needs of your child and whatever special interests they have, we aim to ensure your child thrives at Bessemer feeling safe, having fun and enjoying success. We want our pupils’ time in our school to be memorable and believe we provide a caring environment where every child is valued as an individual and where diversity is celebrated.
We provide an excellent range of extracurricular and enrichment activities that we encourage every child to take advantage of. We value highly the partnership between home and school and encourage all parents to take an active part in the education of their children. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our school.
The vision for our school is based upon the belief that all pupils can and want to learn. We are a school that fosters a healthy learning environment, which is committed to achievement and developing individual talent.
We want to do the best for every child at every age to develop their physical, intellectual, spiritual, moral, social and emotional intelligence. Our school is dedicated to raising standards in learning and teaching. Our school creates and maintains a safe, happy, sensitive, stimulating and inclusive atmosphere, inviting to adults and pupils.
We are a reflective school that has a culture of continuous improvement. This includes listening to the pupils’ voice through self-reflection and self-assessment. We see this as one of the essential elements of school improvement.
Our school understands the importance of enabling children to learn in different ways. This is why our school highly values all creative activities.
We believe in developing the healthy citizen of the future who can contribute to the wider community, society in general and has a desire to protect the environment.
Foundation Stage at Bessemer Grange aims to give the best possible start to all children by providing a strong foundation for learning, a safe environment and exciting opportunities. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and work towards the Early Learning Goals.
These Early Learning Goals are divided up into 7 areas of learning and development
The children learn in these areas by activities set up for ‘free flow’ when the children can choose to do their learning inside or outside. Our setting has a super outdoor environment where children can access these activities mirroring our indoor provision only on a bigger, messier and noisier scale! They also have carpet sessions as a whole class every day.
Children in the EYFS learn through playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking.
We like to work closely with parents in the EYFS to support the children’s learning and enable them to reach their full potential. Therefore, we have termly opportunities for parents or carers to come in to school to join in with their children’s learning on our Celebration Days; to attend parent workshops for reading, writing and maths, and to use home school diaries to share any special times or achievements with the rest of their class.
At Bessemer Grange, the study of English is used to develop the children’s skills and abilities in speaking and listening, reading and writing in order that the children become confident and competent in communicating their ideas across a range of different contexts and for a variety of purposes.
In line with the National Curriculum, the study of Mathematics is focussed on the development of the children’s mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our home Maths learning scheme is geared towards encouraging the children of Bessemer to practise their number facts at home and then apply them to problem solving activities in and out of the classroom. Skills development is embedded in our approach to Maths from the Foundation Stage upwards with children being provided with a range of practical resources to help them work out answers and results.
Bessemer Grange Primary School is an incredibly creative school. Each year all children from nursery to year six receive artist workshops, theatre workshops, music workshops, visit galleries, theatres, and concert halls.
At Bessemer Grange Primary School we teach a broad and balanced curriculum. Each half term we teach a new topic. Each topic creatively links history, PSHE, geography, art, music, design technology and computing. As well as the foundation subjects the topics are taught through English and Maths where links can be made. Religious education, Physical education, Spanish, Science and Computing are taught as subjects in their own right.
We are proud to be a London Silver Healthy School, demonstrating the quality of our PSHE curriculum. PSHE is taught across the school every week and also via our key stage assemblies. The Bessemer PSHE curriculum is based upon the Southwark framework for PSHE and well-being and we use the Christopher Winter project resources to teach SRE and DATe.

My eldest son is in year 1 and my youngest son is in nursery at Bessemer. I absolutely LOVE this school. The kids are very spoilt to have a whole play ground each per 2 year groups. As well as a lovely nature garden with chickens!! The staff are fantastic and there is a really positive vibe amongst the parents.

My 2 year old son absolutely loves it hear. He settled in super quick and the staff care for the children's welfare. The nursery has a great atmosphere thanks to the staff and so this makes both parents and staff feel at ease. My son has also learned so much, and enjoys singing to me the songs they had sang in the day or experiences he has experience. I would strongly recommend this nursery.

My son in year 2 is very happy here. The school has a great parent community and is a very welcoming happy place with brilliant capable staff who really care about the kids. The senior staff team are very accessible and happy to talk to parents. They have loads of outdoor space on site with 4 playgrounds, an astro turf football pitch, courtyards for all the year 1 and 2 classes, and a lovely nature garden. The school is surrounded by fields and open space in three directions which makes a really peaceful setting with (relatively!) clean air, unusual for London.
