Blue Hills College is a caring school community that spiritually and academically equips, challenges, and inspires students to make a difference. Our rural campus, situated on the edge of the Alstonville Plateau on the Lismore district, offers increased opportunities by providing relevant learning environments for students from Pre-Kindy to Year 12.
Blue Hills College (BHC) adopts a holistic approach to education which encompasses the development of the spiritual, intellectual, social, physical, and aesthetic dimensions of each student. Our general objectives are designed to guide students towards developing of their full potential, and in doing so, supporting them to achieve success in reaching their personal goals.
The school started as a small school in a hall that had been purchased from Alstonville, demolished, and re-erected behind the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brewster Street, Lismore.
Blue Hills College opened as Lismore Seventh-day Adventist School at the beginning of the 1950 school year. The first teacher was Mrs Diedre Holmes who worked as a sole-charge teacher for the multi-level classroom. In 1960 the school was moved to Uralba Street, and a second room was added in 1972. The school was re-named "Seventh-day Adventist Union School" in the 1970’s when the churches at Ballina, Casino and Kyogle joined with Lismore in administering the school. In 1978 a high school was added, and in March of that year the school moved to its present site at Blue Hills Avenue, Goonellabah. Over ensuing years an additional year level was added to the high school until the Higher School Certificate credential was achieved. The school was renamed "Blue Hills Adventist School" in 1987, and "Blue Hills College" in 1997.
At Bluehills College we have a great Pre-Kindy program. Research suggests that the first five years are especially significant in a child’s overall development. Blue Hills College acknowledges this and recognises that learning starts well before the first day of school. Our Pre-Kindy classes provide a curriculum-based program for four year olds.
Our program is based on the NSW Board of Studies syllabus. Children are exposed to the Early Stage One outcomes that they will be expected to master in Kindergarten through play-based, hands-on and integrated activities. Our program is strongly influenced by the new national Early Years Learning Framework - 'Belonging, Being & Becoming'. The program includes a strong literacy and numeracy focus, Japanese lessons, and play based learning experiences. The course has been specifically designed to meet the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of children in a fun and engaging way. Rich learning experiences and meaningful relationships lay the foundation for each child’s development. The program is delivered by qualified and experienced teachers and staff. The interactive and responsive structure of BHC’s Pre-Kindy program prepares children for school and for life-long learning.
Primary school is where the journey begins to take shape - the start of thirteen years of formalised education. Because learning begins the day a child is born, by the time they arrive at school they already have a wealth of knowledge and understandings in place. Our Primary education program at Blue Hills College (BHC) builds on this knowledge base and assists students to establish connections between what they know and experience and what they will discover in the classroom.
The secondary school program is designed to enhance the academic, emotional, spiritual, social and physical development of each child and to cultivate balanced students with integrity, who are committed to serving their community. Our secondary school is registered with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to cater for students from Years 7-12.
