Bowie State University is building a dynamic future on a proud heritage. Bowie State University is an outgrowth of a school opened in Baltimore, Md. by an organization dedicated to offering educational opportunities that the state failed to provide for its black citizens. From those humble beginnings, Bowie State has become a comprehensive university, offering 22 undergraduate majors and 35 master’s, doctoral and advanced certification programs in a broad range of disciplines. Bowie State University continues to build on its legacy of providing access to high-quality education.

Founded in 1865, Bowie State is the oldest Historically Black College/University in Maryland and one of the ten oldest in the country. It is also a diverse university whose 5,600 students, along with faculty and staff, represent many ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The university’s advanced teaching and research facilities include a FlexPod, one of the latest computing innovations with the capabilities of a supercomputer in a box the size of two student desks. Bowie is also home to a satellite operations control center managed in conjunction with NASA and an all-Steinway Fine and Performing Arts Center equipped with the latest technologies for digital media arts and music production.

The Bowie State University campus has all the resources that students need to make the most of their time at the University. They can get involved in more than 90 student clubs and organizations, including 12 fraternities and sororities within the Greek system. The campus offers seven residence halls and a number of dining options. The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life and other offices provide an array of support services to help students thrive, both academically and socially.

The Office of Financial Aid offers financial assistance to students in the form of federal and state programs that provide scholarships, grants, loans and work study to assist eligible students in pursuing their academic goals.

The mission of Counseling Services is to assist students at Bowie State University in their personal and psychosocial growth through the provision of programs and services. Services are provided free of charge for students from their freshmen year through graduate school. The Center supports the institutional mission to graduate individuals who are exemplary leaders in their respective disciplines. Moreover, the Center assists the institution in its mission to develop critical thinkers and individuals with a commitment to the ethical good of mankind. Specifically, Counseling Services assists the institution in its mission by providing personal, social, career, and academic counseling.

Counseling Services also seeks to actively participate in the fulfillment of institutional goals. This task is accomplished by enhancing and strengthening the quality of the Four-Year-Experience Counseling Program. As part of the program, counselors teach sections of the Freshman Seminar course, and conduct psychosocial interviews to aid in the retention of students in each classification.

The Center also offers a student development workshop series. The series provides a forum for creative expression, artistic performance, and educational programs. The philosophy of the Center derives from the belief that every student has basic and unique needs which must be fulfilled in order to function successfully in a learning environment.
