Brentwood School

Brentwood School opened in the fall of 1972 as a co-educational, college preparatory day school with grades 6-10. Grade 11 was added in fall 1973, and the school graduated its first senior class in June 1975. As you peruse the site, please keep in mind our motto: “Start curious. Stay curious. Go anywhere.” These six words drive Brentwood. From the School’s outstanding faculty that fuels the fire of curiosity in our students, to the daily athletic and artistic risk taking and accomplishments that occur on our playing fields, in our studios, and on our stages, to a service learning program that inspires deeper understanding and appreciation of the greater Los Angeles and global communities, Brentwood provides a myriad of opportunities to engage its students. It is this level of engagement that fosters the inspiration and intellectual passion we witness in our students on a daily basis.

With your first steps on campus you will feel the sense of community and pride that is Brentwood School. Brentwood students are devoted to their school, as are their parents and guardians, who give generously of their time and resources. We are a school that is small enough to build upon individual and collective curiosity, and simultaneously large enough to have breadth and depth of opportunity for all our students.

The Brentwood Student Diversity Council is comprised of student leaders from each affinity group on campus that represent diverse identities of the student body. Our goals include but are not limited to creating dialogue between the school administration and students, raising awareness about the experiences of underrepresented groups, and providing support to everyone on campus. We work to ensure that students can voice their concerns and constructive criticisms in a safe, respectful, and open environment. The Council fosters communication between the various represented groups. We uphold the Brentwood Diversity Mission Statement and work to make sure that it is implemented in its fullest form.

Brentwood is intent, purposeful, and strategic about being a school that honors people in all their differences. Not only is that reflected in Diversity as a core value, but a separate Diversity Mission Statement has been crafted in order to emphasize this important commitment by the school. My role is to ensure that equity and inclusion is a component of everything we do.

Equity is being conscious and cognitive of our efforts to best meet the needs of all members of our community. Inclusion is creating an environment where all participants and constituents can be their best selves, irrespective of background, experience and lifestyle. We do this with a variety of measures, policies and programs. We do this through our curriculum in what we teach and how we teach it. We are both motivated and inspired to be members of a vibrant community that recognizes that diversity is advantageous now and in the future. We work together as students, parents, faculty and administration to maintain an inclusive community. We are passionate about what we as a community can do together.

Children are encouraged to be curious and creative while developing confidence in their abilities. The curriculum is traditional in nature with an emphasis on reading, writing, and math, yet the teaching and learning process is child-centered. Written and designed by the faculty, our program is unique to Brentwood School. Grades study various themes integrated with the subjects of social studies, science, and other “special” subjects. Basic skills are taught, and the thematic approach encourages students to retain their enthusiasm and love for learning at the same time as they are learning the basic building blocks of school work.

Teachers work together to build explicit links between subjects to deepen students’ understanding of the world in which they live and to enable students to consider higher-level thinking. Our hope is to engender wonder and a belief in every student that s/he is a powerful learner.

Finally, our goal is to inspire enthusiasm for learning and to nourish each student’s intellectual and emotional development in a supportive and diverse community grounded in Brentwood School’s core values of trust, respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, community, and diversity. Our program and strong partnership between students, parents, and faculty will empower our middle schoolers to become well rounded, lifelong learners who are able to see through multiple lenses in order to understand and improve their world.

Of paramount importance in our students’ lives is helping them to find balance. We encourage students to continue pursue their athletic interests and artistic passions and to engage in the life of the school. As a small community, we cannot absorb many “specialists”; our athletes are artists, our singers are poets, our thespians are skilled debaters, and our dancers are student leaders. Not only are our students’ tastes diverse, but their accomplishments are lauded and supported by their peers and faculty.
