Building a Legacy: How GEMS World Academy is Transforming Education in Dubai

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Dr. Saima Rana, the CEO/Principal of GEMS World Academy, Dubai, to gain insights into her vision for the school, her approach to education, and her thoughts on the future of learning. Dr. Rana’s passion for education and her commitment to providing students with a world-class education were evident throughout the interview. Her innovative ideas, strategic planning, and focus on student well-being make GEMS World Academy a truly exceptional learning environment.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

2025 promises to be a very exciting year for GEMS World Academy – Dubai. We have just opened our new state-of-the-art senior school campus, which offers a wealth of opportunities to students in Grades 9-12, preparing them for life after school in a unique and stimulating environment.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Innovation and future planning are key aspects of any world-class school, and we are no different. We are currently in Year 2 of a three-year school improvement plan, which sets out specific aspirational targets and ambitions that we want to achieve. This provides us with a strategic roadmap that filters into all areas of school life, including academics.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

One of the biggest shifts for the education sector will be the integration of AI in teaching and learning. While AI has the potential to personalise education, enhance data-driven decision-making, and streamline administrative tasks, schools like ours will need to navigate concerns around ethical use and data privacy.

Another challenge for school leaders will be recruiting and retaining top educators in an increasingly competitive global landscape. As expectations for digital literacy and innovative teaching methods grow, schools must provide strong professional development, competitive career pathways, and a supportive environment where teachers feel empowered to adapt to change.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

We recognise that each student is unique and that their motivation to learn varies. A key strategy is fostering strong personal connections – taking time to understand their experiences, challenges, and interests. By maintaining an open and approachable leadership style, we can quickly identify students who may be struggling and provide the right interventions to keep them engaged. Our aim is to make learning meaningful, ensuring students always see the relevance of education in their lives.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

Our academy is a celebration of cultures, with students from 117 nationalities. We celebrate this diversity by fostering an environment where every student feels valued and included. Our open-door policy ensures students, staff, and parents can approach our school management anytime, reinforcing our commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all. Our fully inclusive ethos and practice embrace challenge and the promise of success for all, from each student’s unique starting point.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

Student well-being is a top priority, and we take a proactive approach to managing stress and preventing bullying. By being actively present in school spaces – walking through corridors, visiting classrooms, engaging with students – teachers can spot early signs of distress and address issues before they escalate. This approach helps build a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking help when needed. We have also sought further opportunities for student leaders to support and enhance wellbeing opportunities for our pupils, as we firmly believe that students play a pivotal role in creating and celebrating the best in our school culture.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

We are deeply committed to preparing our students for the future. Our focus on data and technology integration in education ensures that students are equipped with the skills needed in a rapidly evolving world. By staying abreast of technological advancements and incorporating them into our curriculum, we provide our students with a competitive edge for life after graduation. We also firmly believe that our IB curriculum teaches skills of social integration and responsibility as much as it does the skills of critical thinking and inquiry. This serves our students enormously well throughout life.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

A strong partnership between the school, parents, and broader community is essential for student success. We maintain open channels of communication, encouraging parents to share feedback and participate in school initiatives. Regular updates and community engagement help create a collaborative atmosphere, ensuring families feel actively involved in shaping the school experience. By fostering this student-centred, inclusive, and forward-thinking environment, we aim to provide an education that empowers young people to succeed in all aspects of life.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

One of the most important factors is investing in teachers’ development – offering meaningful training opportunities, mentorship programmes, and pathways for career progression. When teachers see a future within the school and feel empowered to grow, they are more likely to stay. Beyond professional development, well-being plays a crucial role. A positive work environment, open communication, and recognition of contributions help create a sense of belonging and job satisfaction. Teachers who feel heard and appreciated are more engaged and more committed to their students and the school’s long-term vision.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

We value personal growth and professional development and want to ensure our teachers have ample opportunities for both. Most of our leadership roles are currently occupied by faculty members who were initially hired as teachers and then promoted to leadership positions. This approach to staff development and succession planning is a key feature of our retention policy.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

It could be said that any after-school activity that ignites a student’s passion for a specific discipline, be that academic, sporting, or otherwise, could potentially have the biggest positive impact on a student’s future. With over 220 enrichment activities to choose from at our academy, we want to ensure all students are given access to future-defining opportunities.

Students have experienced considerable success in areas related to our entrepreneurship programme, in a wide variety of sports, and through one of our many expressive arts activities. The importance of these, in addition to some of the many avenues to develop our students as proactive global citizens via Model United Nations or the World Scholar’s Cup, cannot be understated.

12. As a principal, what is your definition of success?

Success is not just about academic excellence; it is about shaping future leaders with the skills, confidence, and integrity to make a meaningful impact. Success means every student graduates not only with outstanding qualifications but also with a deep sense of purpose, resilience, and global responsibility. It is about being a beacon of world-class education, where the IB ethos is lived every day and where our school is more than an institution – it is a movement driving positive change locally and globally. Ultimately, true success is not measured by grades or awards but by the lives we inspire, the dreams we nurture, and the lasting impact we create.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

‘True education goes beyond knowledge; it ignites curiosity, builds character, and equips every learner with the power to shape a better future for themselves and the world.’
