Bygrove is an outstanding one-form entry primary school serving a multicultural community practically in the shadow of Canary Wharf in the East End of London. We have been a National Teaching School since 2013, supporting other local schools & alongside our alliance partners, training the next generation of outstanding teachers. We may be small but we think big.
Our pupils are at the heart of everything we do. They are happy, friendly & well-behaved & they love learning. They achieve results in all subjects that are well above the national average & consistently make much better progress than their peers nationally too.
Ambition, Respect, Compassion & Collaboration; everyone at Bygrove knows & lives by our values. They're what you'd find running right through us if you cut us open like a stick of Brighton Rock; they're what makes us tick.
Bygrove is a multi-faith, multi-cultural, multi-lingual school, with pupils and staff hailing from nearly 20 different countries & practicing many faiths, the majority being Muslim. This has a very positive impact on the school; we feel extraordinarily lucky to be so diverse. We recognise just how much we can learn from one another & ultimately just how similar we all are.
Every day at Bygrove Primary School, the staff and governors are working to make sure that by the time you leave us:
At Bygrove, most learning takes place in cross-curricular lessons based on a theme. Each term every class studies a different theme; some are science based, some are historical and others have a geographical bias. Over the course of a year, pupils will experience one of each. The themes are exciting and pupils have the opportunity to help to plan them.
In addition to the class themes, the Bygrove curriculum includes themed weeks and days which are a focus for the whole school. These special themes reflect the context of the school and our local community and include Eid, Multicultural Week, Comic Relief Week and Be Healthy Week.
It is a curriculum that has been designed & shaped over many years to be as exciting as it is relevant & to fulfil our school vision of preparing our pupils for life as global citizens in modern Britain.
At Bygrove we are fortunate that our pupils, their families, our staff and other partners represent a diverse range of home backgrounds. We teach a themed curriculum which links with the national curriculum. It also incorporates the interests of pupils and supports them in becoming good local, national and global citizens of the future.
Respect is one of our 4 core values. Pupils understand that respect is shown to everyone, both adults and children. We help them to develop an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures. Staff and pupils are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour. Links with local faith communities and visits to places of worship is promoted and people from different faiths are invited to school to share their experiences in assemblies and in class. Through the PSHE and RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to discuss and respect differences and similarities between people. We offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which all major religions are studied. Through our thematic curriculum we learn about the world in topics such as Rainforest Defenders and Globetrotters.
