The aim of the Cambridge International Scholarships and Vice-Chancellor's Awards is to ensure that the highest scored students, irrespective of nationality, receive full financial support to undertake PhD studies. The Scholarships pay the University Composition Fee and a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single person.
Applicants who wish to start their PhDs in the next academic year must apply by either 3 December or 7 January, whichever deadline is appropriate for your course.
All applicants should complete the funding section of the online application form via the Applicant Portal ticking the box to express their 'wish to be considered for funding' and by completing the Cambridge Trust Personal Statement.
A University Committee will draw up one scored list of all PhD applicants across all disciplines. The only factors taken into consideration in agreeing this list are academic qualifications, references and research potential. The financial situation of applicants does not affect the selection of scholarship winners.
Successful applicants are informed by the Trust at the earliest opportunity, usually in early March of the year of intended entry.
In order to maximise the number of Scholarships awarded, the Trust will, when appropriate, promote winners of Cambridge International Scholarships and Vice-Chancellor's Awards to other full-cost awards with partner organisations, UK Research Councils or Departments or Colleges, who are willing to provide either the full amount or part of the cost of the scholarship. Where part of the cost of a scholarship is offered, the Trust will meet the balance.
If a student receives a full-cost scholarship from any source (excluding Gates Cambridge), the offer of an award from the Trust will lapse and you will be offered the status of 'Honorary Trust Scholar'. This entitles you to attend the Trust's events but bears no monetary value. If you have accepted a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, any offer of an award from the Trust, including those offered with an Honorary status, will immediately lapse.
Following meetings of the Selection Committee, the Scholarships are awarded early in March and you will be informed if you hvae been successful in winning one of these awards.
The Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust was established on 1 August 2013 from the merger of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust. These were established as charities by the University of Cambridge in the 1980s in order to provide financial support for international students on degree courses at Cambridge.
The Trust awards approximately 500 scholarships annually, and supports between 1,100 and 1,400 students in residence each year from 85 countries across the world. During its history of over 30 years of offering scholarships at the University of Cambridge, the Trust has awarded a total of more than 20,000 scholarships to students from around the world.
Today, the Trust provides the largest number of scholarships for international students at Cambridge, working with partners worldwide to support students of outstanding academic merit under a variety of scholarship schemes.
Awards, which include both full-cost and part-cost scholarships, are offered to selected students at PhD, Masters and undergraduate level, in all subjects and at all 31 Colleges of the University of Cambridge.
The Trust has 13 members of staff, led by a Director, and is governed by a board of Trustees. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is the Trust's Patron.
