  • Challenge Exams and External Credentials are acceptable ways of earning credit.

Reading daily is one of the best ways to improve one’s English Literacy, Grammar, and English Comprehension. By reading every day for one hour, a motivated student will have the confidence to read English novels and journals with ease. Reading books, graphic novels, journals, or magazines can also teach eager student’s about English culture, therefore helping them assimilate into everyday western life.

Academic Reading and Writing is an intense, intermediate course that aims to improve students’ reading and writing skills. It is suitable for ESL Levels 2/3, as well as for BC students in Grades 9 or lower. Students will practice their reading, analyzing, and writing exercises. As a result, confidence in analytical and comprehensive English skills will increase. Through the interactive and engaging lessons provided by our teachers, student’s will improve their reading speed, increase their vocabulary bank, comprehend academic vocabulary, and practice writing University level academic essays.

The student’s ability to comprehend a piece of modern or classical literature, acclaimed essay or article, or famous speech, and then write a perceptive analysis or cogent argument is the bedrock of academic reading and writing. This course offers student’s the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills through literary devices, rhetorical approaches, and cognitive ability. The objective is to discover their intellectual potential through the varied processes of acquiring knowledge.

The success of the student is reliant upon their level of curiosity; he/she must be kept engaged, and their desire to learn must be nurtured through a selection of highly regarded writings meant to captivate their wonder. It is imperative that the instructor discovers the unique talent and capability within each student, and nurtures those qualities to which the student can express him/herself eloquently.

This vocabulary and grammar course is intended to help our students to improve their vocabulary and basic grammar before reaching Grade 11. Students will cover over 500 new words and expressions every month, with extra reading materials for self-study. After a three-month period of learning, most of our students will increase their vocabulary by 1,500 words. After six-months, students will capture over 3,000 new vocabularies and will gain a solid foundation for high school grammar. This includes subjunctive mood, verb tenses, verbals, subject-verb agreement, run-on sentences, clauses, etc.
