At Casa Mia we know that children learn despite us; we know the quality of the learning is dependent on the quality and intensity of our children’s relationships with their environments; we know the children need to be active, need numerous experiences of the same things; need consistent modelling from others around them and repeated opportunities to apply and practice.
We know when real learning takes place, the children will want to be independent; will be truthful; be fair and just; strive to be open and accountable; be consistent and reliable; will want to keep learning and always pursue their personal best whilst being cooperative; will be accepting of everyone’s talents and differences and care for the environment in which they live.
As a primary school, the curriculum in the primary section has a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy and what is termed ‘Cosmic Education’. The word ‘cosmic’ in this context means limitless or boundless paying heed to the interconnectedness of everything in our universe. Cosmic education has integrated units known as the ‘Great Stories’ that develop deep learning, higher order thinking, community consciousness and an awareness for responsibilities for the environment.
Our prepared classrooms are an essential part of the Montessori educational philosophy. The furniture and materials are relative to the ages of the children; activities are set up for success and allow freedom of movement and choice. Our environments are warm, inviting settings for our children to explore freely. The classrooms are always kept ready and beautiful enticing the children to learn.
