Curro Academy

Curro Academy Savanna City is an independent school in De Deur, Vereeniging that provides high-quality education for learners from Grade R to Grade 9 with higher grades phasing in annually. Our school’s small class sizes and enhanced curriculum provide learners with skills and knowledge to grow into self-confident individuals capable of reaching their personal, educational and eventual workplace goals. Our dedicated teachers and well-rounded approach prepare learners for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations at the end of Grade 12.

At Curro Academy Savanna City, we offer high-quality education at affordable school fees, along with a variety of activities. Our foundation phase provides the important, strong basis on which further learning is built, through the use of specialised programmes such as Duplo Lego and the NumberSense programme. In later phases, our project-based learning approach allow learners to take ownership of their own studies and learn through engaging, interactive teaching methods.

Our small class sizes allow our learners to receive personal attention in the classroom, which helps to ensure that they reach their full potential. We also offer value-added programmes as part of the school fees, that include character-building programmes, career guidance and entrepreneurship skills.

We believe that participation in school sports and cultural activities plays an important role in promoting health, team-awareness, discipline and self-confidence. Many of our activities are designed to help learners discover new talents, or to broaden their exposure beyond their current reference framework. These activities are generally included in the school fees.

Activities such as chess also help to develop critical thinking patterns used in subjects such as Mathematics and Science. These thinking patterns also help to develop logical reasoning and analytical skills that have far-reaching benefits in tertiary studies and the workplace.

Children learn best in a fun, supportive environment where they form an active part of the learning process. This environment is built by several factors, including the classroom’s appearance, the teacher’s enthusiasm, and the teaching method (how the work is presented).

Our classrooms are designed to be visually pleasing without causing undue distraction, while our dedicated teachers explain or present the work with enthusiasm and passion. However, the most engaging principle is project-based learning, which guides learners to learn the material through their own research and discovery. Rather than simply reading information from a textbook, the information is learned by interacting with the material through assignments, research, discussions, or creative projects.

Grade R is the bridge from the tangible world to the world of symbols and numbers in Grade 1. Therefore, we offer on an integrated play-based programme that aims to develop the learner’s phonological, literacy, mathematical, and creative problem-solving skills in a fun way. Our specialised programmes include GeoGenius, which teaches young learners the basics of geometry by playing and building with three-dimensional objects of different sizes, shapes and elasticity.

In Grade 1 to Grade 3 we focus on teaching the basic skills, concepts and knowledge required for further learning. We offer a vibrant, invitational atmosphere where learners enjoy coming to school and where they acquire a love for learning that will sustain them throughout their school years. We also create opportunities for personal growth so that learners can become personally responsible and accountable for their actions in the intermediate phase.

In these grades, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. Learners are prepared for high school by teaching them how to apply the skills and concepts they have learned. We also promote creativity and critical thinking by encouraging learners to make their own choices within well-established boundaries.

Our focussed subjects provide learner with a solid foundation on which to excel in high school and, later on, make subject choices that would benefit their futures dreams.

At Curro Academy Savanna City, our learners are guided to adjust to a greater workload of higher intensity. Our teaching is aimed at developing innovative and critical thinking, while a problem-solving approach is taken to subjects such as Mathematics. Our affordable, enhanced curriculum places a great emphasis on language development, and 21st-century learning is implemented in subjects such as Computer Literacy and Technology.

Our learners receive guidance when choosing their elective subjects at the end of Grade 9. We also have additional academic extension sessions in the afternoons to help learners who are struggling. The particular days and times at which sessions take place will be communicated as needed.

At Curro Academy Savanna City, we believe that sport plays an important role in promoting friendship, health, team-awareness and self-confidence. While healthy competition is encouraged, the enjoyment of the game is not compromised. Learners are encouraged to participate in sports activities, even if it is merely for physical well-being.

Our learners have the opportunity to participate in several cultural activities, regardless of their interests and abilities in sport or academics. Activities such as chess further help to stimulate thinking patterns such as logical analysis and problem-solving, which help to improve aptitude in subjects such as Mathematics.

We also offer Curro Arts Superhero (CAS) as part of the Curro Create initiative. CAS is an internal creative mentorship platform with a grading element, where learners are encouraged to discover, develop and display their inherent creative talents.
