Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science is accountable for the academic and administrative direction of the Faculty. The Dean’s leadership responsibilities in the continuing evolution of the Faculty of Arts and Science include fostering an environment that promotes innovation and a climate and culture that stimulates all to achieve the highest standards in teaching, scholarly activity, and service. The Dean is responsible for developing a sound student enrolment management strategy with increased opportunities for experiential learning. In collaboration with other Deans, the new Dean will develop programs that will provide opportunities for students to ladder from diploma to degree programs. The Dean is expected to guide the Faculty in a bicameral governance model, foster a collegial work environment, and develop guidelines to clarify the Faculty’s expectation for research contributions in an institution focused on undergraduate teaching. The Dean will strive to enhance the Faculty’s reputation and financial position through effective budget management, entrepreneurial activity, cross-disciplinary innovation, and partnership development.
As the ideal candidate, you have a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service, with a Ph.D. in a discipline in the humanities, social Sciences, or natural sciences, and qualify for appointment as a Full Professor. You have experience in university administration and familiarity with bicameral governance models. Your previous experience is with an institution that places a high degree of importance on the quality of its teaching and the provision of a variety of learning options and modes of delivery, and you have a keen interest in exploring options for on-line learning and experiential learning. You have the ability to develop well-researched business cases in advocating for new resources, and you have a collaborative leadership style that empowers others and encourages participation. You have prior experience in developing or contributing to academic planning at the Faculty or institutional level and a communication style that inspires, engages, and encourages creativity and innovation. You have demonstrated experience in developing empowered teams and evidence of strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive and supportive work environment.
