Elizabeth Moir School

Elizabeth Moir School is an independent English medium international school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The school is co-educational and admits children from both Sri Lankan and expatriate families resident in Sri Lanka.

Elizabeth Moir School is a fully independent private school and the only international school in Sri Lanka to be owned and run by British nationals. Elizabeth Moir, the Head of School, has run international schools in Sri Lanka for thirty six years and founded Elizabeth Moir School in 1996. It immediately established itself as one of the very top international schools in Colombo and its commitment to small classes, individual attention and an all-round education have ensured it continues to set the standard.

The school operates from two spacious leafy premises in an easily accessible residential area in Colombo. The Junior School has always been on Park Road and the Senior School moved from Guildford Crescent to Thalakotuwa Gardens in 2003.

Teaching our students how to learn is just as important as teaching them what to learn. Rather than simply loading their memory with the thoughts of others, we try to encourage all our students to think for themselves, and to ask questions as well as to provide answers.

To stretch the minds of our students and to keep them interested in their own education, we strive to make the classes as interactive and varied as possible. Different methods are used by different teachers who share the same objective – getting the best out of each student.

Elizabeth Moir School has a progressive international curriculum that blends new and innovative approaches to learning with a traditional focus on basic skills such as grammar and arithmetic. We recognise the central importance of students learning key skills they will need later in life but also that school should still involve learning facts, and aim to retain the best of both conventional and modern practice. The curriculum is regularly updated to stimulate students' interest by exposure to the latest cutting-edge developments in each subject, from Artificial Intelligence in ICT to Climate Change in Geography.
