‘Entrepreneurship and Personalized Learning Define Our Approach,’ says David Lees

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview David Lees, the visionary Principal of Citizens School, a trailblazing educational institution in Dubai. With a deep commitment to entrepreneurship and personalized learning, David shared his insights on the school’s plans for 2025, their approach to academics, and their strategies for ensuring all students feel welcome and have equal chances to succeed. This interview provides a glimpse into the innovative and inclusive educational environment that Citizens School fosters, empowering learners to thrive as global citizens.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

2025 is a landmark year for Citizens School, one brimming with opportunities to make our mark as a trailblazer in education. We are setting bold goals—achieving Full COBIS Accreditation and excelling in our KHDA Inspection—while continuing to deliver an innovative and inclusive learning experience.

Our vision of “Inspire, Empower, Thrive” is not just a motto; it is a lived reality. With our entrepreneurial focus, personalized learning pathways, and unique transdisciplinary curriculum, we are already reshaping what education looks like. As we continue this exciting journey, we are dedicated to building on our achievements and paving the way for every learner to thrive as a citizen of tomorrow.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Continuous improvement for learners, mentors, and staff is at the heart of our academic strategy. For learners, our focus is driven by their unique needs and interests, ensuring a personalised and bespoke experience. Our mantra of “everyone known and known well” encapsulates this commitment.

In 2025, we will deepen our emphasis on entrepreneurship and a growth mindset, integrating hands-on, inquiry-driven learning experiences. We are also enhancing our tech-driven learning approaches, creating critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through real-world project-based learning (PBL). These strategies empower learners to achieve more than any predefined academic plan.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

The rapidly changing world presents significant challenges, especially preparing children for careers that do not yet exist. The World Economic Forum predicts that 65% of today’s children will work in such jobs, demanding flexibility and adaptability. Furthermore, the integration of technology will reshape education.

At Citizens, we proactively address these challenges by embedding the needs of tomorrow into learning today. Transdisciplinary PBL, a focus on entrepreneurship, and digital literacy form the backbone of our curriculum. Coupled with a strong emphasis on learner well-being, we create balanced environments where learners thrive.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

At Citizens School, our learner-centered approach focuses on each individual’s passions and strengths. By living our commitment to “everyone known and known well,” we ensure that every learner feels valued and understood. We make learning meaningful and engaging by connecting it to real-world challenges, encouraging learners to take ownership through hands-on experiences. This approach helps learners see the purpose and impact of their studies, sparking a love for learning and joy in their educational journey.

Our philosophy personalises learning, fuels curiosity, and builds confidence. We believe education should inspire, not be a one-size-fits-all experience, that misses the opportunity to develop a love of lifelong learning in our children.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

Inclusivity is integral to our framework. Every learner at Citizens is recognized as a unique individual. Personalised learning experiences and strong mentor-learner relationships enable us to nurture each learner’s strengths, needs, and aspirations.

Inquiry-based learning creates active participation and celebrates diverse perspectives. With tailored resources and opportunities, every learner can succeed academically and personally. We strive to develop a supportive and inclusive community where all learners feel valued and respected.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

Creating a safe and supportive environment is a priority at Citizens. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and develop open communication. Our school counsellor and Learners Council play vital roles in embedding social-emotional learning and well-being into our daily practices.

Through reflection, stress management strategies, and conflict resolution, we empower learners to navigate challenges constructively. Learners who feel happy and safe are better positioned to thrive.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

Citizens is a skills-driven school emphasising holistic development. Our transdisciplinary PBL approach integrates multiple subjects into real-world projects, creating critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Entrepreneurship is a cornerstone of our curriculum. Learners develop creativity, leadership, and resilience, essential for navigating an ever-changing global economy. By the end of their journey at Citizens, graduates leave as successful, adaptable, confident, and innovative individuals.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

At Citizens, parents are true partners in our learning ecosystem. The Parent Advisory Group (PAG) works closely with the Senior Leadership Team, providing insights, participating in learning walks, and ensuring that every parent’s voice is heard.

One of our standout initiatives is the Citizens Parent Co-Mentoring Programme. This year, we launched this innovative platform to invite parents to share their professional expertise directly with our learners. From leading workshops to collaborating on entrepreneurial projects, parents contribute to our curriculum in impactful ways. Together, this synergy of the school, family, and community enriches our learners’ experiences and strengthens our shared vision.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

At Citizens, we believe that great mentors thrive in environments that inspire, support, and value them. Our school culture is firmly rooted in our vision of “Inspire, Empower, and Thrive.” Mentors are celebrated for their individuality and contributions, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

Professional growth is a cornerstone of our ethos. Through bespoke training opportunities, mentoring programs, and leadership pathways, we create continuous development. We empower mentors to take ownership of their craft and explore innovative teaching strategies.

By cultivating a collaborative and inclusive environment, we not only attract exceptional mentors but also ensure they remain deeply committed to shaping the Citizens learning journey. Together, we create a vibrant and supportive culture where everyone thrives.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

Absolutely! At Citizens, we believe in empowering mentors to lead and grow within the school community. Our pioneering middle leadership team is currently undertaking an IAPC&M-accredited Advanced Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring, equipping them with the tools to drive innovation and excellence. This initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing leadership talent and creating a culture of continuous professional development.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

The after-school programmes that have the greatest impact are those that go beyond the classroom to inspire learners’ passions and develop essential life skills. At Citizens, partnerships with world-class organizations like the NBA, Speedo, and Stryx provide unparalleled opportunities for learners to grow in their areas of interest. Whether it is refining athletic ability, enhancing teamwork, or building resilience, these activities, along with our diverse mentor-led programmes, empower learners to achieve their best and prepare them for future success.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

Success, to me, is the realisation of potential in everyone who walks through our doors—whether learners, mentors, or parents. It is about creating an environment that inspires confidence, curiosity, and a drive to achieve. Whether it is a learner pursuing their dream at a top university, launching a business, or securing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like an NBA scholarship, success at Citizens is measured in individual journeys. My role is to inspire and empower every stakeholder to thrive and make meaningful contributions to the world.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”
