The Kavli IPMU invites applicants for faculty position in broad research areas of theoretical, computational, and observational astrophysics and cosmology. The research areas include (but are not limited to) galaxy formation and evolution, large-scale structure of the Universe, physical cosmology, dark matter, dark energy, and big data or advanced statistics driven astrophysics/cosmology. The Kavli IPMU is a leading institute of two major imaging and spectroscopic surveys, Hyper Suprime-Cam and Prime Focus Spectrograph, at the 8.2m Subaru telescope, and the applicants would be encouraged to participate actively in these projects.
There is also the possibility of individual access to the Subaru, Keck, and ALMA telescopes via the National Astronomical Observatories of Japan. Junior candidates will be considered for a tenure-track assistant professor, while exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered for a tenured associate or full professor position. The successful candidate is expected to create a strong synergy between cosmology, astrophysics, and physics to pursue our goal.
We seek to build a diverse, highly interactive membership, and female and international applicants are strongly encouraged. We have a policy to allow full-time members to travel internationally for between 1 and 3 months every year to build a global network for the Institute. The Kavli IPMU has an active post-doctoral fellowship program with 3-5 postdoctoral fellows hired per year in astrophysics and cosmology, who are encouraged to collaborate with the faculty. There is also an active visitor program every year
The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, UTokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity. The University aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.
