Fukushima Medical University

Fukushima Medical University was founded for the purpose of nurturing medical professionals who will contribute to the promotion of health, medical care and welfare of the citizens of Fukushima Prefecture. It is also a research institute with the aim to contribute to the community and the welfare of humanity through advances made in medicine, nursing and related areas.

Medical care is the collaboration of medicine, nursing, and allied health professionals. We care for the health and wellbeing of each individual, and strive for a better future based on respect for human dignity and adherence to high ethical standards.

Fukushima Medical University promotes education, research, and medicine based on the following principles:

• We respect human life and nurture medical professionals with high ethical standards.
• We pursue advanced medicine and nursing.
• We provide holistic and integrated medica l care as the core medical institution in the prefecture.

More than three years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent Nuclear Power Plant accident, and with the start of full-scale revitalization, we pledge never to forget, never to allow the memories to fade, and to explore a future full of hope with the people of Fukushima. Fukushima Medical University has always seen its mission as lying in the education of first-rate medical professionals, in the furtherance of medical and nursing research, and in the provision of highquality and advanced medical care. It is now time for us to take a fresh look at this original mission to ensure that we are indeed fulfilling it, while also being alive to the significance of the historical mission that destiny has given us in the form of the unprecedented disaster. This new mission calls on us to become the powerhouse in achieving a revitalized Fukushima, while overseeing and protecting the physical and mental well-being of the people of Fukushima. To this end, we hereby present our new vision as the expression of our University’s determination.

We are committed to making the “Fukushima Global Medical Science Center” the hub of concerted efforts to achieve a revitalized Fukushima underpinned by a reliable and safe infrastructure to support the daily lives of our citizens. Initiatives to this end will include: long-term provisions for the promotion of the physical and mental well-being of each and every one of our citizens, the creation of new healthcare-related industries, and support for community-based healthcare. No matter how long it takes, we swear to provide ongoing support to Fukushima residents until every one of them feels that revitalization has been achieved.

Returning to the principles that inspired our foundation, we are determined to continue our efforts to educate and foster medical professionals equipped with the advanced knowledge and skills, coupled with high ethical principles, that will enable them to assume a vital role in the revitalization of Fukushima. We are committed to the continual enrichment of our educational capacity and curricula of our School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Graduate School of Medicine in order to send out into the world medical professionals with proven competence in terms of knowledge, skills, and professional bearing. At Fukushima University Hospital and Aizu Medical Center, we bring to bear the on-site provision of practical medical care in enhancing our capacities as a provider of education and healthcare. We provide attractive training programs, and perform career-long education to nurture medical professionals with a good balance of specialist and general skills. In addition, as a mark of our appreciation to those who sent warm messages, offered assistance and helping hands, and all the humanitarian responses from all over the world after the disaster, we are actively engaged in developing medical professionals well prepared for possible future complex disaster: not only well versed in disaster medicine and radiation medicine, but also equipped with the necessary social communication skills.
