Gisborne Montessori School is a small, non-denominational, independent school, providing Montessori education for babies, toddlers, preschool and primary school aged children in accordance with the philosophies developed by Dr Maria Montessori. It is one of 4 independent Montessori schools in Victoria currently holding primary registration as well as an early childhood education (pre-school) license. It is the only Montessori primary school in Victoria that is purpose built on sustainable principles.
The school is located in New Gisborne, a picturesque country town graced with tree-lined streets, nestled at the foot of Mt Macedon. It occupies a 10 acre site on Barringo Road, within walking distance of Gisborne station and about forty-five minutes drive from Melbourne. Once a paddock, grazed by horses and devoid of trees, it now encourages biodiversity, links wildlife corridors and creates habitats for native species of plants and animals.
At Gisborne Montessori School we actively empower your children by encouraging, facilitating and guiding their development to allow each child to reach their own potential. We encourage in children the skills to enable them to look within themselves for self approval and wisdom. Respect for self, each other, the community and the environment are core values of Gisborne Montessori School.
Families in our school community are drawn from many towns in the district. Some families have relocated to the area to be closer to the School. The sense of community is built through social functions, working bees and volunteer committees. Students, staff and parents are involved in the wider community through participation in community events, excursions, fundraising for charities, use of local libraries, swimming pools and other local facilities.
Our Vision Creating a peaceful, sustainable future through the empowerment of individual potential. Our Objectives
Dianne delivers a wealth of experience to grow and sustain outstanding Montessori education for our students. Dianne has over thirty five years of experience in education, including twelve years in School Principal roles at Plenty Valley Montessori and Melbourne Montessori Schools. Dianne also contributes to the training & tutoring role of Montessori World Education Institute (MWEI) and is a mentor for Australia’s next generation of Montessori leaders.
Dianne is a very approachable and friendly leader. Around the school you will rarely find her in her office. She is usually conducting special tutorials with the students such as “Bounce Back” resiliency topics and Botany lessons, leading school tours or even helping parent volunteers with gardening. Dianne welcomes all enquiries and opportunities to meet with prospective and current families.
Curriculum specialist areas of Art, Music, Language Other Than English (Auslan), Animal Husbandry, Sustainability, Library and Physical Education form a vital component of the school curriculum. A specialist music program offers music appreciation, theory, rhythm and choral experiences for all full time students. Opportunities to perform at the Annual Concert and other school events enhance the Performing Arts program. Incursions and excursions provide opportunities for students to enrich the learning through real experiences. Regular activities include cultural performances, Responsible Pet Ownership, libraries and galleries.
From Year 1, students begin to participate in excursions, providing them with opportunities to develop their public social skills and safe behaviours. From Year 4 students are encouraged to make good use of the educational opportunities available further afield. In addition to the cultural education, students develop their confidence and independence through practicing their skills when using public transport safely and exhibiting appropriate behaviour when mixing with public.
The whole school assembly is an opportunity for our Graduates to showcase their leadership skills. It gives the children a strong sense of identity as they realise they are part of a bigger whole. Both the children and parents enjoy the presentations. ‘Bounce Back’ is a comprehensive program as a basis for building resilience and in developing positive friendships. These lessons will equip our students to develop a strong sense of self and to learn to deal with the ups and downs of life in a positive manner.
