Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Dr. Darwin Joseph, Dean of MDIS Singapore, to discuss the institution’s strategic vision, its approach to modern educational challenges, and its commitment to student success. Dr. Joseph provided insights into MDIS’s efforts in digital transformation, fostering diversity, and enhancing graduate employability through strong industry partnerships.
At MDIS, our vision is to be a leading education institution recognised for nurturing future-ready graduates through accessible, industry-relevant, and technology-driven education. Over the next five years, we aim to scale our multidisciplinary offerings, expand our global footprint, and deepen our partnerships with industry and academia. This includes introducing new programmes in high-demand areas such as digital marketing, artificial intelligence, and healthcare management, and collaborating with international universities to widen our students’ global exposure.
Digital transformation is central to our academic strategy. We have invested significantly in enhancing digital literacy and technological integration across all campuses. Our programmes are designed with blended and online learning components to ensure flexibility and accessibility. Strategic initiatives, such as our partnership with Edinburgh Napier University, UK, to introduce degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, ensure that students acquire the digital skills needed for the future economy.
MDIS has always championed cultural diversity and inclusiveness, exemplified by our transnational education model. With campuses in Singapore, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, and students from across Asia, Australia, and even the US, we foster a vibrant, multicultural learning environment. Our Student Leadership Programme promotes inclusive growth by offering experiential learning on leadership to students of all backgrounds. Internally, we ensure our policies support equal access to learning, while externally, our CSR collaborations with non-governmental organisations such as the Singapore Red Cross further cultivate values of empathy and inclusivity.
We believe education is a catalyst for global change. In the area of public health, we offer programmes in healthcare management and actively support mental health awareness through our MDIS Mental Health Series, which addresses stress, anxiety, and well-being. On the environmental front, we promote sustainability education through academic content and CSR activities. Our collaboration with local and regional partners encourages responsible practices and fosters awareness, especially among our students. We are also looking to embed sustainability themes more deeply into our curricula and research priorities.
Industry collaboration is a cornerstone of the MDIS experience. Our campuses work closely with corporate partners to design curricula that reflect current job market demands. For instance, our Dushanbe campus partners with industry partners such as TGEM and TCELL to offer internships and work-based learning. Across all locations, we provide platforms for dialogue and exchange between students and professionals. These efforts not only enhance graduate employability but also provide our students with valuable insights into evolving industry trends.
At MDIS, student well-being is a top priority. Our Mental Health Series, covering topics like anxiety management, and positive relationships, has been instrumental in fostering a supportive environment. We integrate mental wellness into student life through peer networks, faculty guidance, and co-curricular activities. Additionally, the MDIS Student Council often lead initiatives that promote empathy and emotional support within our community. These efforts reflect our holistic approach to education that goes beyond academics.
We recognise that academic excellence is driven by passionate and qualified faculty. To attract top talent, MDIS offers professional development opportunities, and exposure to global best practices. Our faculty engage with curriculum co-design, regional education projects, and transnational education delivery across campuses, which enriches their teaching and research. Furthermore, by fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and academic freedom, we ensure our educators thrive in a dynamic and fulfilling environment.
Our alumni are an invaluable part of the MDIS ecosystem. Through alumni engagement events, mentorships, and industry talks, we create bridges between graduates and current students. Alumni regularly return as guest speakers, career mentors, or workshop facilitators. This network also plays a key role in supporting our part-time degree marketing campaigns, where alumni share how MDIS empowered their career advancement. These interactions provide students with practical insights and networking opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
“Empower Your Future, One Lesson at a Time.” This reflects our commitment to lifelong learning, personal growth, and the belief that every step forward, however small, is a step toward success.
