A Guide to Vehicle Testing in Dubai (2026)

It is a general rule in Dubai that all motor vehicle registrations must be renewed every year. Car dealerships will take care of the initial registration for new cars and motorcycles, which can then be re-registered by the selected insurance companies. The owner can visit any of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Customer Center or any other approved testing facility.

As per the legislation in Dubai, vehicles must undergo vehicle tests at their respective frequencies to ensure the vehicles are safe to drive. In line with Dubai’s strategic vision of ‘safer vehicles’, the vehicle testing promotes vehicle safety as unsafe vehicles will not be able to pass the test and therefore, must rectify the defects before being able to be driven on the roads of Dubai. – RTA

  1. Clear any traffic fines through the Dubai Police website.
  2. For vehicles more than 3 years old, the owner should take it to any RTA Customer Center or any other approved testing centers. The car must also pass the inspection test if the current owner is not the original owner of the vehicle
  3. Pay the necessary fees. The vehicle testing fee in Dubai costs 150 AED.
  4. Once approved, the new registration sticker should be pasted on the rear license plate.

There is an option to book an appointment at a vehicle testing station. However, most people just go directly with the required documents.

Be sure to bring the following documents:

  • Owner’s passport and residence visa copy
  • Emirates ID
  • Existing vehicle registration card
  • Agreement documents (if there are any unpaid car finance plans)

Vehicle Testing Procedure in Dubai

Upon arrival at the vehicle testing center, proceed to the bay and hand over your documentation. There should be no valuables left in the car. The owner should wait while the test is being performed. Most testing centers have testing rooms and screens where owners can see their car being tested.

After the test, the owner will be informed if the vehicle passed or failed according to Dubai RTA requirements. If the vehicle fails testing, it should be repaired (upon the recommendations of the inspection officer) and re-tested within 31 days.

A “passed” certificate is issued once the car has passed RTA inspection. The owner will also receive a new car registration card and a date sticker, which should be at the back end of the license plate. If registration of the car is not complete, it is still valid for one month. The registration must be finished within the month the vehicle is tested.
